Here's something you can put on the back burner.
Why not install a "Thru the Wall" Heat & Air Conditioning Unit.
Personally, I think thru-the-wall is better, because you don't lose a window for the install.
They got some real good ones at www.AMRoyal.com
All you need to know is the size of you garage...recommendatios are noted.

I really appreciate the sacrifices, you, and all the other Military families are making. I just can't help from thinking about all the men and women serving our country...everyday.

My hat's off to you and your father for doing such a tribute.

Best of luck to everyone.

Ductless Mini Splits are the one room, easy install, baby versions of a central air system. Pricewise they don't compare all that well to cheap wall shaker at the end of season clearance, but many like them for one room solutions.

Don't know how big the buget is... but what about a roller tool cabinet?
Yup, very expensive... if you buy it new. Sometimes eBay or surplus stores may
have "scratch & dent" items that have little or no major defects.

This is what I mean. Waterloo 42" 12-drawer roller cabinet... (Click on pix.)

Price new $575 = "Scratch & dent" price = $275. 24" cabinets even cheaper.
Minimum elbow-grease and it should look like new... Worked for me.
He should really go crazy about it too.

BTW extend the life of the (MDF?) top by spraying it with 3M Body Shutz.
The black rubberized undercoating works wonders for looks and durability.
Got the idea from my Scratch & dent Kennedy cabinet. That's how they're made.

My $0.02¢

Just a thought, but you might want to leave something for him to do.
Your motives are good, but it won't be "his space" if you give it to him without any effort on his part.

My wire started my garage while I was away on a trip. Got a little worried when I came home and my cars were outside, but it was the coolest things ever when I open the garage door. I did everything but paint the walls. Our walls are dark blue with a Gray strip.

I think I've decided on the walls finally. I want to go with a light gray and then add 2 stripes. One red and one black. With a space in between the stripes to let the gray show through. I got most of the cabinets yesterday but I still am missing one piece that I wanted. But we're going to the other local Home Depot today to see if they have one. I also got four 4' lights that look really cool. But I think we are going to get one more. Because of the way they will have to be hung up (due to the ladder being in a funky spot). The attic space is very well supported. It must not look like it in the pictures but myself, my dad and my uncle have all been walking around up there and it's holding up like a champ. There are quite a few beams linked form the roof of the house to the "floor" of the attic space. The Corvette stool arrived today. (super fast IMO) I'll put that together once his cabinets are in place.Still deciding on a work bench.

I did want to get him a tool chest, but my dad suggested that I let my husband pick that out himself. So, we'll do that. He seemed pretty territorial about it, saying " I wouldn't even feel comfortable picking that out for him. That's something he's got to choose."

Insulation is now going up on the exposed side wall. It will be off to HD again here soon for some more drywall. As far as A/C goes, I bought a window unit that we are going to create a space for. There is only one "window" (if you can call it that) in the garage that we will have to make bigger. If my dad had not already done a similar job before, I would be hesitant. But I know it can be done. It will be behind the locked fence/gate of our property, so I'm not too worried about prowlers trying to get it out to break in.

Someone asked about the garage door a while back. That is brand new from last year. It is a roll up kind that is insulated. So I can't wait for this all to be done. It's going to be very nice.

PRO-15 offered me a nice deal on some of the epoxy stuff. I am trying to configure if I can afford it. You guys think it's a nice way to go floor wise???

I'm missing the floor cabinet that has 3 drawers instead of doors.

I just want to say thank you again to everyone who has helped me out so far. You guys have all been really nice and helped me a lot. My husband is going to LOVE this garage. I'll keep updating as I go.

What is the outside finish of the garage? Brick? siding?

My father added a window unit to his back porch which had been converted into a sunroom, he cut a hole in the wall below the window and stuch the unit there, turned out nice.

As an auctioneer, I have many years of experience with marketing.

What you are doing is a human interest story and one that the local news will most likely pick up. This will help with your garage sale. You need to do a "press release" to all of the local new outlets about 4 days prior to the garage sale.

I think a press release is a good idea, you may be surprised what local companies might donate to the cause. Perhaps wall cabinets, workbenches and the like. I think you should do it before you are done to see if you could reap some help with your project.

I took you guys advice and emailed the local new station, NBC 7/39 San Diego. We'll see if anything comes from it. *fingers crossed*

Wish I could contribute to the build if closer. But I can go out to my tool box and find a tool that I have as a duplicate and send for him. If we all just sent one small wrench or tool to him, I bet it would sure fill up his tool box. Thanks to him for helping us live safe. Would need address to mail to. One wrench, screwdriver, or ?. Know we all got em!

Oooooh my Lord. You will NOT BELIEVE the contribution my friends husband just made to the garage project. Go 'head...guess. You'll never guess....

An honest to goodness STRIPPER POLE!

Her husband was out at the local Swap Meet and found a chrome stripper pole for $20. I think after some heavy duty sanitizing...this could be awesome!!

Oh, I also found a poker table yesterday for $15. We'll see if I can hook up the murphy bed-style like I had originally planned.

The drywall is all up and yesterday we started working on electrical. I'll go take a picture later on in the afternoon. My baby passed out on the floor right now.

OK, I am not physically able to let this pass without due recognition... Let's review:

1) Nice user-name, it conjures a certain image.
2) You are OBVIOUSLY a very caring woman as you are building your husband's garage while he is out saving Democracy.
3) You are perfectly willing to have a POKER table AND a STRIPPER POLE in your husband's "man-cave".

With all due respect to both you and your husband, I understand you're married (hell, *I* am married), will you marry me? I mean warm up the lawyers, let's GO. I mean I LOVE my wife, but I'm sure there are other guys here asking themselves if it gets any better than THAT!?!?!?

Seriously though, I think those are awesome, and I can verify that if he's a red-blooded, heterosexual, American male there is absolutely nothing finer you could gift to him. Kudos Mrs. DD's

Why thank you sir. We'll see how this garage goes over with my husband, then we'll talk about that proposal.

And the user name...I don't know. I know it's a bit gaudy but, I was trying to think of something that would help a chick get through to guys on a garage board. ha ha. Guess it worked.

Oh and yes, he a TOTAL "red-blooded, heterosexual, American male". He likes the hunting, the fishing, the beer...he's fits the stereotype in every aspect. Ooh-rah!

And I'm glad somebody finally commented on the stripper pole, I was afraid I had offended everyone on this board!

Heck there are few enough females on this board to start with, I think you'll find PLENTY of support around here BECAUSE of that. It's not that they aren't welcome, but it's UNUSUAL for women to become involved in garage-stuff like many of the members here do (no offense Annette and other quality female members). And being intelligent males (mostly) when we do see a lady who expresses an interest, I think we as a group try to foster that, encourage, and help out where we can.

Now your specific situation as we've already gets you MANY, MANY additional bonus points on a number of fronts.

So, no, not offended at all, and you'd have to try harder than that ma'am!!!

Offend the guys on this board? LOL, possible I'm sure but not by mentioning a stripper pole!
Of course, I've been trying to come up with a way to make it doubly useful, like storage for a track wheel set-up maybe???
Now if only we could convince her to do a couple of days at a Driving School....

Yeah you'd have to go pretty far to offend most of the folks here I think.

What ever happened to that "*** in the garage" post anyway? :lol_hitti :pimpflash :lol_hitti
