FYI

I have had limited contact with 2DD over the last couple of weeks. Her husband is aware of the whole messy situation, garage and all. She and her daughter are doing as well as possible under the circumstances. She is actively working with all of the debt counseling & relief services that are available to her through the military, in an effort to resolve this crisis. Her family and friends are there for her and are providing emotional comfort and support. Unfortunately, most of her daycare clients have gone away, and she is having difficulty attracting new business.

Some observations:

I must admit that, although not so eloquently stated, some valid points were brought up in previous posts by mattgg1, aarcuda, and rabbit. And in this day and age, a healthy amount of Internet cynicism is an absolute necessity.

Nonetheless, in her defense, 2DD has had MANY opportunities to take advantage of the charity of GJ members, and has refused. In fact, she stated very clearly in post #204 that she will not take any charity from this forum - period.

I think the only thing that 2DD is guilty of is good intentions gone bad.
Was the moniker "2DoubleDs" a mistake? Perhaps, but I'm sure it seemed clever at first (and it sure worked).

Were the garage mods a mistake? Yeah, maybe she should have thought it through a little bit more, but it appears that she and her husband, like so many other people, got caught up in the current home finance crisis sweeping the country, and the couple of thousand that she spent on an ill-timed garage makeover was irresponsible, but it probably didn't change the overall picture.

I know she is appreciative of everyone's moral support (and I believe she has stated that a number of times).

I wish her and her family all the best.

Those like me have made our choice on this issue and I guess are just not interested in your take! So I guess the best thing you can do is save yourself the finger exercises on this thread and move to another where we might find some common ground!

Wow. What a response. So what you're saying is...if I have an opinion/viewpoint on a topic that doesn't follow the majority view, then I should remain silent?

Doesn't that go against the intended purpose of the internet and internet forums? Isn't expressing a contrary view one of the founding principles of this country?

By any chance, do you live in Cuba or China?

Look at kbuhagiar's post; this should put the whole pissin match and all the speculation to rest I would say his post just gave the thing closure with really nothing more to be said! Sorry for those I offended, I tend to get cranky and unkind at times!

Ken,
I am glad that things are moving in the right direction for her and her family and as a former Marine, I have seen the same thing happen that they are going though. Always seems to come to a head when they are on deployment.

Good head on her shoulders to take advantage of the facilities and help available to her on Base, good on her.

As for the mods to the garage she wanted to do for her husband who is forward deployed....I have a healthy dose of respect for her wanting to do that for her husband. She wanted something special for him when he came home...believe me, I totally understand her wanting to do something special for him and until you have been deployed (usually doing things not so pleasant) it is hard to understand. When I came home, my wife always did soemthing like that for me.....I totally understand what she was trying to do.

Again, hats off to her and the folks her for supporting her......

I can only say from personal experience that a "soldier" at most every level to about Major makes about half what the same position pays in the private industry. Households are not cheap to run these days. What's wrong with a wife wanting her husband to have something to look forward to when he arrives home? All she asked for was advice. If she asked for money I would send some. In the meantime I think this thread is having a negative impact on the boards. A moderator should close it before it gets ugly.

I'm glad to see there are those few who are so privledged that they have never been in an embarrasing position caused by a series of indiscriminate decisions that would warrant help - be it financial or emotional help - from friends or family. I haven't offered this gal a dime and nor will I, but for others to judge those who do....well, thats just fucked up. I am in the business of seeing people do nothing but hurt each other and rip each other off so for me to see the support given by complete strangers to a person down on their luck is a nice breath of fresh air....there are kind hearted non-judgmental people among us....its just a shame to have a few turds stink that fresh air up.....

Hi guys, guess who's back? The big trouble maker. I have heard that some nasty things have been said on here so I am choosing not to go back and read them. Anyway, I have two bits of good news. First and foremost, my husband comes back from Iraq on Tuesday, which happens to be my birthday. How cool is that?? Secondly, our mortgage company is FINALLY ready to negotiate. All this time they refused to talk to me, wouldn't work with me, were sending me all kinds of threatening letters and stuff. Then suddenly and out of the blue they sent this package with stuff for me to fill out basically saying "Lets make a deal"!! So lets all pray to God for a miracle and that we'll be able to keep this house.

 :bounce: :deathmeta :fingersx:

Lets also pray that my husband doesn't strangle me when he sees the garage.

Okay, so I cheated and went back a few posts. Let me clarify some stuff...

CLEARLY...I don't know much about mortgage jargon. But all the BIG trouble started in October when the California fires went retarded. I had to close my daycare for a week and evacuate. That was a huge financial set back, being as I had already lost a few kids, I had to refund money for that week and spend money to get me and the baby the hell outta Dodge. Room and board for a week is expensive. When we got back I called the mortgage company and asked for a deferred payment, which they refused. So I fell behind for a payment. The next week they sent me a "You're loan is in default" letter. Scared the **** outta me. Like I said, I don't know much about this stuff so I figured that I was in forclosure after one missed payment. After that they wouldn't talk to me to work something out. And everyone (friends, family, realitor type folks) would suggest all these things and I would say " I tried that, they said no." And they would all go "Well who's your mortgage company?" And I would say "GMAC" and everyone would go "Ooooooooh. Okay, yeah. They're harsh. (no sh*t, you're telling me!) And so it has continued until very recently when they sent a letter saying 'fill all this stuff out and we'll see what we can do about re-working your loan'.
:rocker:

So that's the SHORT recap of what's been going on.

Oh, and my screen name...come on guys. It was a joke. And the stripper pole was a gift, remember? Some friends knew that that's the sort of thing my husband appreciates. It was all meant to be a gag gift.

Hope it all works out, maybe the new legislation passed in the Senate last week put the mortgage people more at ease...best of luck.

BTW I don't think there's anyway a guy would be upset with a fixed up garage that was meant as a gift before all hell broke loose in your area of the country.

That's GREAT NEWS, Double D's. Don't give up the ship!

The financial people are in huge trouble, and they REALLY DON'T want another vacant home on their books. You can use that to your advantage. I hope it all works out for you.

Congrats on finally getting to see your husband too. Ask him to stop in here once he gets back home.

Amen to what Vic said.
There are so many people in trouble that the tables are turned if you are will to make any payments at all.
A whole lot of people are just walking away and leaving the house to the bank. And banks are not, and don't want, to be in the real estate game. They are in the money game.
It was so bad in Houston when the bottom fell out of the oil market in the 70's that banks were letting familys stay in the homes for free if they would keep them up.
It saved them maintaince money, and kept the neighborhood from looking like a gehtto.

Hope this is the start of things getting back on track for you.

I'm thinking that "lost a few kids" translates to "parents no longer bring their kids for me to watch"... not literally losing a child.

Just a guess on my part. :bounce:

Yall are crazy.

Okay, it's officially my birthday and if all goes as planned I'll be seeing my husband in about 17 hours. And I still have so much to do. Gotta go early tomorrow morning and start hanging welcome home posters everywhere. I JUST got the baby to sleep. The floor is a wreck because I'm still making the posters. Better get back to work. Just wanted to share my excitement of his impending return!

I hope the DoubleD chick takes a SERIOUS lesson from this.

Sadly, when people get bailed out, they tend to expect it later on, so
her poor financial planning will only continue. The whole mortgage
crisis is 100% about people buying property that they cannot
afford. "living beyond your means".

I love in post #17; "Most everything I get will have to come from
Home Depot, mainly because I have a pretty good amount of credit
there and I really don't want to charge anything else up"

DoubleD, after everything fails, and you're done taking handouts from
the government and the mortgage companies, Check out John
Cummuta's: Transforming Debt Into Wealth program. It *really* does
work. It's the best personal finance program out there. Forget the
wealth part... Just transform your large debt, into smaller more
managable debt.

What you were doing for your husband is very admirable, yeah he's probably gonna get mad at first but after some time in the garage he'll get over it. If your family got approved for base housing that means you two can do some hard *** negotiation with those **** biters at your bank. Be sure to remind them that you don't "need" that house anymore then watch the bean counters squirm a little bit. Please tell your husband "Thank you for serving our country and protecting our way of life."

Wow guys. Thank you all so much for all your great ideas. And thanks Danglerb for the wallpaper boarder links. Those were cool.

Most of the things on the floor will end up in the "attic" we will be building when we finish the ceiling in there. Here's where we've gotten with the ceiling so far...

GarageProject022RESIZED.jpg

(I guess I should add that the boards that were previously up there were just kind of strategically 'placed' and nailed down. Not in any kind of permanent fashion.)

Looks very familiar:

Doesn't look like you will be able to walk in the "attic" with those joists. Stair way is probably a waste...$$ and it takes too much clear space to pull it down. I went with a simple access panel and a cat walk up there in case I needed to go there...like the insect control guy ahd to. (by the way, no ant guarantee without access)

What does he do in the garage? (he should spend more time with you I think]) ie, how much work...will he need Air Compressor, welding, a lift? Get some of that liquid stuff, put it on the oil spot and vac it up.

Here's what I did:
100 amps service, including 50 amp 230 volt slow blow welding circuit, 30 amp compressor circuit.

Insulation walls and ceiling.
Dry wall for walls and ceiling.
then I put up tub surround the bottom 8 feet.
WHITE. No it's not gay, smooth white surface reflects the light so you can see what the heck you are doing. That cheapo "popcorn" finish you see so often just about *eats* the light and holds onto dirt. you can just wipe down the tub surround.
got some 8 foot sealed flourescent light units second hand. But recessed would probably be fine. ( the super hot tip is to put flor. lights all around the perimeter like a halo with reflectors...buddy did it...totally eliminates shadows for body work and detailing...but he's a pro) I also left the incandescent sockets in operation because flor. don't likt to light up rigth awqy when it is cold.
New insulated garage doors.
Propane "SEPARATED COMBUSTION" HEATER.
Tried a window 6k AC last year...ptah...must need at least 12,000 btu for my 2 1/2 car space.

We'll be finishing enclosing that all, insulating it, adding a pull down ladder, and then sheet rock (or drywall...whatever. YOU guys know what I mean) and also lighting. My dad also has some idea worked out that when the hatch gets opened for the pull down ladder, a light will automatically turn on up there. So we can find all our stuff. What mostly resides up there normally are seasonal decorations.

****How about a gable fan up there...will help keep the garage cool in summer.

I like the idea about adding more outlets, so we'll be doing that. (thanks bluesman2a) Now, overhead lighting...I think some sort of can/recessed lighting would be nice looking. Is that a bad idea for a garage though? Should I just go with a bunch of shop lights?

depends on budget. better to use those 4ft, 6 tube troffers. recessed every 8 ft or so. you cant have too many outlets or too much light. But I have seen people just wire up 8ft shop units, lots of em, cause they are cheap. Recessed will be better if you have a std 8 ft ceiling.

He will need a godzilla work bench. That is a bench that is tied down somehow, with a big damn vise on it all of which is so solid you can whack something on it with a seldge hammer and not move any of it.

If pop is building the bench, design it so you can wheel in some standard 5 drawer roll aways under it. That way you don't have to build drawers and they are amazingly cheap at Sears or HD.

Since you will have it all cleared out...epoxy paint the floor.

(Oh, and I really like the stripes on the wall idea DynoDave. Very creative.)

best of luck and don't forget to post photos..Especially if you can catch the look on his face when he sees his surprise.

Arthur
