Hey there folks, new guy here with a few questions on reclaimed commercial poultry barns. I went halfsies with a buddy on a 40x100 and took 40 foot of it and he got the rest. I know what some of you are thinking, these aren't exactly cost effective when you factor time in. I have far more time than I do money so this is the route I'm taking. I only have about 1500 invested in the building so far so I'm not to deep. My questions are:

How should I "X" brace the building? It is the steel truss with 7foot side walls that I will extend to 10foot. The doors will be on the gabled ends. So how many X braces do I need and where should they be located?

Question 2 is should I stick with 2x4 girts and perlins or upgrade to 2x6? I plan to spray foam the building eventually and the snow loads aren't crazy here in NE Kansas. The wind howls but the building will be somewhat sheltered from wind by hedge rows.

Hoping to poor my slab in the spring and build it as soon as I'm able. The county approved an additional entrance to my property today so I now have the acces to get concrete trucks back to it which has been a long and painful process. Thanks in advance for any information you're willing to share.

Get ahold of another member nterry1957. He is doing exactly what you are with an old poultry shed and raising the walls to 10 feet. Good luck with your project. If I were you, I would talk to an engineer before spending any more money.
His thread is called Cluck Cluck save a buck 40x40 and by now has run 4 pages.

As far as your questions, how far apart are the columns/trusses?

In a red iron building, typically one bay is X-braced both sides, obviously not the other direction as the main steel members are very strong in the plane that runs thru them. I would take on that same direction. Try for at least one bay, but more cannot hurt. I got a roll of 16ga Simpson flat metal strapping and it has gone in very easily. I put at least one X or "V" shape on each of the 4 walls in my stick build. The V-shape was necessitated by the windows.

As far as 2x4 or 2x6, what are the spans between the poles? (wooden posts correct?)

our steel truss poultry houses 36x340 are x braced with cable at each end between the end and 1st truss. Were built in 1980. the trusses are web leg though not straight leg.

Matt they are steel web trusses with 6inch channel legs, will be on 10ft centeres. Should the x bracing be on the ceiling AND the side walls? Or one and not the other? *edit I forgot to add... The trusses will have angle bracing to the perlins as well.
