The good old children's toolset. How many of us had something like that?
Maybe in a couple years he can get something like Snap Circuits Jr for some electronics practice. I've got a 6-year-old cousin who loves his. I had a more advanced electronics project kit when I was about 10 and that was really fun.

And the kid is thinking..."I wonder if these'll get me into grandpa's liquor cabinet..."
I had things like that and a toy lawnmower. I used to follow my dad and grandfathers around when they cut the lawn and worked on stuff. Its all what got me started in the mechanical engineering field. My "First tool box" (a little plastic job) is actually the toolbox on my boat today!

I've been giving my 5 year old all my USA craftsman tools as I upgrade...Don't see the point spending money on plastic tools.

I did the real tools, you can pick up little wench sets around Christmas time for a couple bucks. Not great, but they will actually do something, but also not a big deal when you find them in the yard as the snow melts. Be careful if you find them with the mower.

I didnt have many plastic or real tools until I was in my teens. My last maintenance job, I had to have my own roller and tools. My son was born right before I left that job and the next job supplied 3/4 of the tools I needed with me supplying the rest. I gave my son (at the ripe old age of 2 months) the box and tools. He's 6 now and uses them with my supervision. Its funny to me to say "I need a Phillips screw driver or a tape measure", hell say "oh oh ill go get mine". Off he goes to the garage and gets his. I love these years!!!
My late son had two sets when he was little, both with tools he could actually use. One had a bunch of combination wrenches in it, metal and metric, as well as some other tools, all in a (reasonably) nice wooden tool box. I think we still have that. He also had another set of carpentry tools. The saw needed sharpening (but hey, this is for a young kid), the other tools were not too bad. He managed to break one of the claws off of the hammer trying to pull a 10 or 12d nail. I remember he was messing around with the end nippers and found out what happens when you clamp those jaws onto the pad of your finger. I think we still have most of this stuff, somewhere.

As far as real tools for kids go, my mom once took me to the dollar store and let me buy a hammer... for $6. Not much of a dollar store, huh? Well, at least the hammer is reasonably decent.
It's the only tool from my childhood that I still have. It's only about 5 feet away from me as I type this message, too.

Im sorry for your loss KRB52....last week I handed each of my kids free coupons from HF and turned them loose in the store. It was so funny! l give them a bunch of scrap wood and let them have at 'er in the garage. Keeps them out of my toolbox!
I don't know that I'd go quite that far, but my five year old is getting my old CM stuff as well. Along with some Knipex and Estwing...
I'm the same way. I originally gave my son random chiwainese ratchets and sockets I ended up with. Over the past year these have all been upgraded to usa made tools-mostly craftsman- as mine are upgraded to snap on/sk/etc. from garage/estate sales we both go to.
I'd also be willing to bet I've spent less on the real tools he has than I would have on the plastic ones from a store!
I don't remember where my dad or mom bought them, but I had some kids tools as a kid. They weren't plastic, they were probably cheap chinese stuff, but everything was miniature, it came in a wooden box with a small belt. My parents were doing renovations on their house, and I wanted to "help". I wish I had pictures or kept it around.

I remember being kind of let down once I realized plastic tools don't actually do anything when I was little.
Once I had access to some real tools I started taking apart everything I could get my hands on....
