Chimney brush

Good afternoon,

I’ve got a basic question for those burning wood stoves.

Out at my cabin, last summer I installed a Drolet stove with about 30’ of dura-vent 6-inch double wall stainless chimney. Actuallly, about 10’ of stovepipe and 20’ of chimney. A couple of 45 degree bends near the stove.

While I‘ve only burned about a dozen fires in it (seasoned split post oak), I would like to clean it annually.

Do I order a 6” brush for a 6” pipe? Or do I need a larger size? E.g. 7”.

And is the procedure just to run it thought a few times? Similar to swabbing out a gun barrel?

Any tips appreciated. This is not wood stove country.

Look at a utube video sure there's some. Mine was straight rope and a weight on the same size as flue.

Pretty sure mine is 6", definitely nylon.

I'll have to measure it or look for th box, not showing up in ky Amazon purchase history.

Edit: 6" nylon brush for 6" pipe, cleans it to bare metal. This is 6 years annual use, probably need a new one next year.

I agree that your brush should match your flue size, Would you try to clean a 16 gauge Shotgun with a 12 gauge brush?

I have a similar setup in my detached workshop, except around 18' of straight pipe. I use the SootEater Rotary Chimney Cleaning System to clean the pipes every year...bought it in 2016 for $49.95, now appears to be $70. Works perfect and zero complaints. I disconnect the pipe above the stove and clean the lowest portion from below (do this last to minimize the sooty mess that I can get from the roof end). I can easily replace the 'whips' with weed eater line, but won't need to for many more years as the line that came with it are holding up well.

Typically I run mine up 1x (I find it easier to clean a catalytic stove from inside) and down. That has cleaned any buildup.
