Been using these type (Phone China marker) to mark on steel and some other surfaces. But these aren't ideal (not sure if they're just not well made any more or what), but difficult to sharpen and pulling the paper to access more of the marking "lead" is pointless.

Anyway -- anyone know of a good one that's being made besides this one?

Sharpie or lab pens work very well for marking on most metals. They also wipe off clean with alcohol (rubbing, drinking, wood) or acetone. I use them daily in the lab for marking on glass, metal, hard plastics non-porous plastics, etc. Just a spray from the alcohol bottle and wipe.

I had been using Sharpie's and other markers, also tried some wax markers; all worked OK. Then a few on here recommended paint pens for various tasks. I found many on eBay, from China, shipped for $1 or less, they work great. I got many colors including white and silver for black or dark background.

For my uses, these are much better than Sharpies or other alternatives.

At work (Toyota) we use a ton of china markers. We get 2 brands. I can't tell you the crappy hard to sharpen brand but the good ones we get are Mitsu-bishi Rainbow. We sign all of our parts with them.

Thanks for this. I've used the Mitsu-Bishi pencils (made in Japan) and they are great. Didn't know they make China markers. I'll check out.

Other suggestions on this thread are great too.

Thanks all.

Nissen markers. They have everything you could need. I use a paint marker and scribe most often.

I've been using a mechanical pencil style China marker made by Markal called the Trades Marker. Lots of different colors of "lead" and no paper to peel off. I buy mine at Menards but I think I've seen them on Amazon.

edit: Pelican Pines beat me to it, that's what I get for not clicking the link...
