They got me.....

I bought 10 5w edison bulbs and 10 beehive type bulbs.

after about 4 weeks in a ceiling fan, one of the edison bulbs let out a loud pop and smoked, the large cap inside blew its aluminum cover off, no fire but still worrisome.

after about 3 weeks the beehive bulbs burn out, after 6 weeks Ive lost 6 out of 10.

FAIL..... dont buy the Chinese LEDS direct ship

how long does it take to figure out you cannot trust Chinese-made products?
first it's the CFL's, now the LED's.
(and don't forget the blade-type ATC 12-volt automotive fuses that didn't blow out until the guy hit them with 75 amps.)

on the other hand, with all the money you save buying Chinese-made stuff you should be able to afford the premiums on a really good fire insurance policy.

most everything is made in China at this point, once the LEDs mature they will work fine when bought direct, its just too early.

For automotive use they are perfectly fine. I would never use one in my home however because they are huge fire hazards. I follow this guy on youtube and he has covered several of the Chinese LED's on his channel and points out just how scary they are.

That assumes they are not selling the rejects out of the back door:lol_hitti

It always going to be too early if they are selling poor design or shotty manufacturing.

Buying from a ligit store comes with come comfort they have standards and if things go wrong get a refund ( warranty ) and if things go really wrong they have insurance.

If your buying direct ship from China even through eBay or Amazon there are huge risks.

I just try to look at things from realistic point of view.

LED lighting is absolutely bleeding edge technology, since the concept is relatively new.

Engineers try to get the optimum light out of a relative tiny semiconductor chip, while other engineers and marketers, try to make it more affordable (cheaper).

I recently saw a video (now three years old) with Jay Leno in a hip garage , where the "new" American made LED light tubes, costs $73 each.

How many of us will (can) buy into LED, at that price? I have Chinese LED tubes in the garage and a few round ones in the house. I guess I could set up all night and worry about the risk of , fire, but frankly, it just sounds stupid.

I have a 60" Chinese LED TV, that could burn out my retinas, or go "****" and catch fire in the night. Should I worry?

Certainly some Chinese are cutting corners, or pushing technology, that needs to be addressed. and eventually will be a non issue.

That has never happened with products made in America?

which ones are you using? the ones I saw local even though purchased here were sourced from china. I look at the light bulb case and can usually find identical assemblies direct ship from china so to me they are most likely rebranding an import anyway.

Are they truly made in the USA? Does anyone actually make LEDs themselves in the USA. Cree assembles LED bulbs in the USA and I have a lot of those in my house.

Many of the "brand name" LED bulbs are made in China.

Look for a csa or ul approval .
If you're buying directly from China chances are that they are either unapproved or use a counterfeit approval stamp. Good luck with your insurance if one of those causes a fire.

Not sure about the COO.... I have been switching mine from CFL to the GE brand 100 Watt equivalent Led bulbs/sticks. It's great and bright.... I also have the BJ's Sylvania brand for the same price ( and it ***** , but only one that fits in the ceiling fan)

Sylvania --> $28 for package of 4 --> ok bright but flickers when you first turned on --> just gave you some unease feelings on an LED bulb.

GE light stick --> $14 for package of 2 --> great and very bright.

And NO, you should never buy those LED lights from Ebay that ships from China.... it's just not the same as buying from HF.... It's the quality, standard, and questionable safety, questionable components, questionable accountability when **** happens.

All these are good or pretty good...
The Sams Club GE light stick is Made In China ,,,,
same with the Sylvania brand also Made In China.....
the Feit brand from Costco is Made In Taiwan .....
the Home Depot brand EcoSmart bulbs is Assemble in Mexico....
The Ikea brand also made in China.

Haven't encounter American made bulbs for consumer yet... if you see one that is good quality and affordable price let me know. I think the subject was the OP tries to warn us that he bought some cheap LED bulbs from Ebay shipping directly from China.... those are like a bag of poops you just never know what you get. But when you buy things like that from China, you should already be expecting that to happen..... More like you walked into a 99 cent store and expect industrial quality merchandise out of it......

yep, that's my point, at some point the manufacturing process will be stable enough that the direct ships will be the same, just haven't reached that point yet.

It will never be..... that way... reaching a point where you can buy goods from China that is the same safety standard as other regions........even each region's standard are different...

those bulbs you buy are not intend for the US markets ... the Chinese have a different standard on safety.... They probably don't care or can't control their safety with so many fly by night operations... it's buyers beware when you buy things directly out of China.... Both the businesses in US or China when it comes to profit, ethics will be profit first, ethic last. Only difference is that in the US there are laws that protects the consumer....

Not true, the manufacturing is ALREADY very damn stable and cheap this is evident by sales where the bulbs are under $1 each for reliable brands. The issue isn't the parts that are being used per se, it is the design itself. The cheapest models will ALWAYS be this bad, the only difference will be that they will find ways to make it even more cheap than before as the design matures. Keeping a similar failure level. There are likely already direct ships that are solid quality, they just aren't the CHEAPEST ones.

There are good sellers and bad sellers, finding one that you can trust is important. I have a hong kong sellers I deal with for test leads and the like, he is top notch and I have not had a SINGLE thing I order from him that didn't impress. He's never the CHEAPEST but hes often the best value.

Similarly, look at Xiaomi. They aren't the cheapest manufacturer in China for phones and headphones but their products are GREAT values. Their phones are very highly reviewed being great quality, their headphones (I have the Piston 3's and LOVE them) are not the best but once again great value.

so you make both points. I never said the cheapest only that eventually you will be able to get them bulk cheaper from China. There's always really really cheap, but somewhere above that they will be fine. I look at the design of the US ones, then find the same design in a Chinese bulk item. One thing that people dont know about China is by law whatever is in their factory basically is theirs to sell, so if you run 1st shift making your product they can run 2nd and 3rd and sell it as their own.
