Looks like Ryan and the mods put out that wildfire. I flagged one myself.

GOOD WORK GUYS!

I took a screenshot of what things looked like a few minutes ago but decided not to post it here.

Starting a spam attack... 22 posts so far...
Flagged a couple, but it's be way easier to swing the ban hammer on the SOB doing it.
Have an awesome evening...
Click on a username, then report.

That said, I doubt it is necessary to report more than a single post as it's glaringly obvious that the user needs to be booted

Of course... I flagged a bunch, then said the H with it and posted... as it was like 3 AM you guys time, I knew someone would see the posta s well...

I don't think we've been hit quite THAT hard or that fast in a long time...

I miss having limited admin powers on (other) boards for events like this.

It's like the old days of Pagers... If they don't answer in 1 minute... page them again.... and again... and again. I saw the attack AS someone was deleting them.

Yeah, it was a mess, wasn't it? We had almost the same Chinese-text-with-Western-university-names spam avalanche a month or so ago, and as usual, our excellent mods took care of it before most of us were up for the day.

Ryan has worked hard on the spam prevention. It's way down from what it used to be. I'd guess we only see maybe 10-15% of what we used to see.... I counting what the staff sees, no general members.

Agree... there was a time... I reported spam at least once a day... some were massive runs too. Now this is the only spam party I saw more than one or two entries.

Now If only I could stop my Email SPAM that's making it thru my filters. They are using a unique From email address each time... the message always has a bunch of ................................. ............................ lines... which I have been using to snag and JUNK them.

I've reported about 30 this morning so far... guy is still on line hitting us for all he's worth....
Thisis becoming commonplace. Wish I had the admin toolbox, I'd shut this turd down and start housekeeping... Serious beans, I may not be a girl scout, but I would love to be here while you guys are asleep (like now) and whack these things.

BTW - I just did a bit of looking at whos online - we have 4 "guests" who are following the threads of this current spammer... probably his secret police handlers... heh heh heh...

Looks like the bass-turd spammers are at it again. Don't know how to alert a mod to mass attack, likely will be aware of this when logging in.

My brother used to administrate an international site with a forum, and I remember they had some debate, and decided when It got bad they'd block all traffic from .cn for a couple days, and that would bring spam and ddos attacks back down to a normal level.

I report a post, and when I realize they're only posting spam I make a note in the report:

  • New spambot
  • New member all spam
  • Multiple post spammer
  • Prolific spammer
  • 5 spam post on front page
Etc.

I know, it's driving me nuts - on the forum I was once an admin on (left bcause I kinda sorta outgrew the event it was based on), the **** started this way and grew exopnentially. We ended up with a dozen admins spread all over the globe, and finally started blocking entire ISP addresses before we got it under control... Once the Chinese (and make no mistake ALL of them were China based) started it was hell until we killed their access - not just blocking .cn but the ISPs they were being sent from.

It was a battle we damned near lost. We probably spent a collective 16+ hours out of 24 for a while killing them. When we could catch them on line and active we could backtrack their ISPs and kill them that way, and it would shut down the other bots they would switch to. We're really lucky hat right now they're only using one or 2 accounts, but when they get hot and heavy, they'll start pushing dozens and running them simultaneously. Ugly, ugly ****..

Like before, they go active when they figure America is asleep - they start about 2 AM, and finish up a couple hours later, to get as much of their poison on the forums they invade as possible.

Revenge for the balloon.
Funny but interesting;)

Interesting how they started right before the balloons came over.... now they're hitting just as the other ballons are over south america, etc... maybe the spambots are verification signals to make sure the balloons are functioning properly...

Years ago was part of Apokiliptika, 3:00ish and A... :flamethroHaven't been back in years, between work changing for the extreme worse without my azzole boss jeopardizing my job. Last time I went they tried to "random" drug test me (failing of which meant immediate termination) even though my job didn't have random drug tests. SO yeah, I miss the dust, tho... Now with the move to Italy it's really difficult to get back over.

That was a fun camp I was part of 08-12 or so.
Now I'm a sellout sound provider at a big camp. FrAtmosphere gets worse every year.

We had fun pulling it off. Most of the original cast still pull off a camp called Sideshow, but yeah, nothing like the old Neo-Sovietski vibe we had going... The being overrun by the frat crowd was kinda woat did it in for me anyway - when it went from a campout in the desert to a "be there and look cool status symbol" thing for the wannabes, and people abusing the gift economy with "radical self entitlement", it was about the end of the road for yours truly.

Hello Ryan & Admins,

Sounds like you are already aware of this, but just in case...for the last three weeks or so (or maybe longer?) I have had anywhere between 20 to 80+ email notifications in my Inbox every morning, generated by the Chinese spam bots you have described, of 'new messages' in my watched GJ forums.

It's nothing more than a minor inconvenience right now, as it's easy enough to pick out the spammo and delete it (Chinese characters and repetitive subject titles). It takes me about two minutes every morning, but I'm sure it is causing untold headaches on your end.

I'm more than happy to provide you with any information about these notifications, especially since I am mostly flat on my *** for the next six weeks with a broken foot!

Seriously, if there is anything we can do out here to assist, let us know.

Thanks again for giving us the GJ.
