Chisel problems

While using a chisel to remove rivets, I often find myself smashing my hands with a hammer. I tried using vise grips to hold the chisel while I hit it and it is a huge improvement, but it tears up the chisel and the vice grips, and I still occasionally hit my hands. I have seen some chisels with plastic guards on them, but usually only on larger chisels that are too big to use on rivets. Is there anything that can be done to save my hands?

Learn to aim better... lol. Seriously, try using a hammer with a bigger face, like a 3 lb Estwing. Larger chance of catching the chisel instead of slipping off.

less chisel and rivet action would help

I feel your pain, i often think there is a large magnet in my hand the hammer is attracted to

Or better yet do it the non-Amish way and use a air hammer.

I have this same problem. Learned at a very young age its easier to swing a heavy hammer lightly then a light hammer heavily. For wailing on stuff I use 3-4lb hand drilling hammers, 6lb BFH made by kentool for tires, and a 32oz dead blow drilling hammer. Extra long Chisels are extremely helpful. you can also go the way of the air hammer or rotary hammer, sometimes they lack the force.

I quit beating on chisels a long time ago and use air guns now. For bigger rivets, it helps to take a cut off wheel and cut an X in the head to almost full depth, then hit it with the chisel.

Go to your local Batting cage and take 100 or so cuts in the 80 MPH cage to improve your hand eye coordination ............ on the serious note, use a chisel holder like the Williams shown above as sometimes an air hammer just won't work especially if you do not own one
