I got this manual chain hoist when my dad died. He had it since as long as I can remember so I'm guessing it's around 60 years old.

The other day my son got his farm tractor stuck in the muck and couldn't get it out. Usually this hoist can pull almost anything. I've pulled tractors out before that we couldn't pull out using another tractor. Well, this last time he was cranking on it and the chain snapped. I took it back to my shop and tried to reinstall the chain and the chain got hung up in the hoist. I ended up taking it apart and got the chain to thread through. Put it back together and everything seemed to work fine until I went to ratchet the chain in the "down" direction. No movement, jammed. If I flipped the directional lever to "up" it worked fine. If I pulled the release plunger the chain would free wheel in any direction. I just can't get it to ratchet in the "down" position. I didn't take anything apart in the highlighted area.

Just wondering if anyone had one of these and could shed some light on my problem.

I believe coffing/Columbus McKinnon is the parent company of that style hoist these days. Might want to give them a ring. One suggestion is try the down lever with a light load and see if it will ratchet down.

Surprisingly I found manual on line for the hoist before I posted last night, that's where I found the expanded parts drawing. There's a trouble shooting chart at the back of the manual that did list the not working when lowering problem but the few suggested remedies didn't seem like the problem I am having.

After I put it back together I tried all positions. When I used it before the chain broke I would always have to supply downward pull when either being in a the up or down position, I did try that last night before I posted.

I'll give the company a call this morning to see if they can offer any suggestions. I have a feeling it has something to do with the brake. I didn't do anything to it (the section highlighted) but something could have gotten screwed with when the chain broke.

Called the company and they referred me to a local service center. Talked to the tech and he thought maybe the brake came might have snapped when the chain broke. He said I could drop it off for them to take a look at. I really don't want to stick money into this old beast. The only thing it's a tool I got from my dad after he died and we had a long history of using this thing and up until recently it worked just fine. Pulled a lot of dead cars onto my trailer and it has been called into duty many times to pull large farm tractors out of the mud when the other big tractors would only spin all four wheels.

I would not hesitate to fix it if it were mine. We use similar hoist to this day in line construction. Not to mention the sentimental value it hold. Get it fixed and use it for another 20 years and pass it down to your kids.

23rdWell, it looks like I have it fixed. I took it completely apart and cleaned everything. Wasn't much gunk inside just a very thin layer of old baked on dirt and grease. I put all back together and then reeved (I had to look it after reading it in the manual :) ) the chain into the "liftwheel". Here is where I might have screwed up before. The manual instructed that the welded side of the upstanding links face away from the liftwheel. I might have had the chain backwards with the weld seam binding up in the catches in the liftwheel.
