Okay I work on class 8 semi's as well and either set posted will work for most things. You will also need a couple of alignment punches and some long punches for things like wheel bearings. Those you want to be heavy or the will flex too much. I also have a couple of pieces of one inch round bar that I use a punch, one is about a foot long and the other is about 2 feet long. The longer one works great for driving out wheel bearing races if I don't use the air hammer.

Dasco Pro. Not the best of the best, but good quality, USA made, and very reasonable prices.

Dasco Pro, Enderes or Mayhew... all seem well made. Oh, you can get 'Baltimore' at home depot as well which is made by Mayhew.

so im thinking about something like one of these... siding towards mayhew because i want a pouch to throw em in.

Mayhew is the best IMHO. I've used Dasco, SO, Enders and PB Swiss and none of them are near as tough as Mayhew.

It helps to remember that sometimes punches and chisels really fall into the "perishable tool" category, like drills and taps.

look for a used snap on set. these carry a warranty. i picked up my set used for 100-- was the master punch and chisel set in a pouch. tool guy has warrantied 4 of them so far for "tips" not being good. mind you, i ground one down to do the job and other 3 were normal wear that i could have dressed. i wasnt even asking to warranty them--my dealer noticed them in my drawer and took them. i was in shock when he did so thinking they were considered consumables. he says no that are warranty items.

so punches, chisels, and air hammer attachments are all warrantied from snap on. after i found this out i bought the air chisels just for this reason as i have a drawer of other brands all beat to hell.

starrett makes really nice punches- check them out. I have their pin punches and they're awesome. Their center punches are definitely better then Mayhew- I have both. Dunno where new Starrett stuff is made; the old stuff I have is USA marked but the new is not

I just bought the Mayhew Chisel set thinking I didn't need the punches because I have a Starrett set...which is really nice...but now I do wish I'd bought the whole Mayhew set. I feel that weird empty gut void of not having the whole set....it's a sickness...

My choice was simple, I could've bought the 21pc. Snap on set for $480.00.....or the 24 piece Mayhew from my Wright distributor for 142.13! I like getting quality tools AND having extra money in my pocket!

It may not be a punch but Home Depot has some USA made Dasco Pro Nail Sets on clearance for $1-$2 each.
