Hi everyone. My first post on here!

Currently I am in the process of renovating my garage. I arrived at the flooring stage and have decided to do the checkered tile pattern. However I am torn between Black & Gray tiles and the classic Black & White pattern.

Which one would look better in your opinion with this wall colour scheme below? Thanks for any help!

Re: Deciding on Checkered Floor colour combination

I think either one would look great but the black and grey would probably stay cleaner looking longer.

How many square feet do you have there?

That's not mine, I wish it was haha. Mine is pretty a narrow 2 behind-each-other car garage. I took that colour scheme off the internet.

What about doing it in grey and white? And making the squares 2' x 2' size.

Don't really fancy that combination since both of them are light colored and I would like to add some contrast by having one dark and one light colored.

Black and white would be my choice, BTW very nice place you got there , if you have more pics please share them with us we love pictures.

I wish that's mine haha. It's a photo that I am getting my inspiration from.

One question though, wouldn't it be difficult to keep the white tiles clean though? Thanks.

I think I will avoid it also. Should I go for Black and Light Gray pattern or Dark Gray and Light Gray?

thanks.

See if you can get a few samples and lay them next to the wall, otherwise both combinations would work.

I like the lighter combination my self, as it would make seeing a dropped screw easier.

My last garage had the blue and white 99 cent tiles from lowes color is tough but one tip is to use four tiles to make the checker board ie 2'x2' a space as big as yours will get real busy with 1x1.

I wish I had polished my concrete floor. I think that would look great....especially in that place! ...or you could do Dakota's floor. I love the color scheme. I have a floor that I've epoxied, got "hot pick up" then painted over it, spilled u name it on the floor and it looks like ****..... but I don't clean the floor like i should...Whatever you do, that place will look cherry!

Good Morning

I apologize if I missed something, read this on my phone last night and again this am in a different place. Black and white is awesome if it's a show car parking spot or man cave. White tile can be frustrating otherwise because it looks dirty all the time. I tell people it's kind of like a white dress shirt on my 2.5 year old. Looks great for a minute. Black and silver or alloy looks awesome. I also like black and white checkers along the three non-entry walls as a border

Whatever type of product you are using get samples first. If it's a garage tile I know Jorgen, myself and most reputable companies will send out full sized samples.

If it's vct use a good sealer or finish.

One thing that would help you get the best suggestion is a little background on how the space will be used.

I was concerned that using black would be too dark in my garage, so I went with a dark gray and light gray racedeck.

But my garage doesn't have any windows nor nearly as much lighting as yours.

I think the black will look off on the floor given that it is all gray on bottom half of wall. For the same reason, I'd think any kind of checker would look busy given the split

Hey guys. Thanks all for your input and sorry for creating two identical threads.

From your guys' opinions , I think I'll paint my walls a really light gray and my do my floor in Black And Light Gray checkered pattern.

I Think that would look best.

FWIW - I did part of mine in black and white checkerboard. The white is shot after about 4 years. Hot tires, bad weather, whatever. There is irreversible color damage to the white. The good news is they are inexpensive and easy to replace. I will probably go with a different color - perhaps yellow (to match the car) with the expectation that the lighter colors will have to be changed every few years.

Also FWIW - I personally like the red in the floor - makes it 'pop' and breaks up the redundancy of checkerboard. Not saying red is the only way to go - just saying a bright color will be a nice contrast.

Also Also FWIW - mine wasn't TOO bad - but the way racedeck (if you are going that route) is shipped is in 4X4 squares of the same color. So if you are going to do a 1X1 checkerboard in a large space, separating all the tiles will make you want to curl up in the fetal position and cry (at least that's what I did).

Geez ever heard of,"If you have nothing nice to say.....?"

I'd use white and light gray. It'll keep your space looking large.

Of course I have. The subject kind of caught me off guard and I figured it was a joke, so I answered in kind.

I got 730 Sq Ft of black and white checkerboard Racedeck Tuffshield waiting to go down when the weather gets a little warmer. My cars are orange so color choices were limited, black and white will go with anything. The "Tuffshield" will hopefully hold up better. Gulp. :scared:

I purposely didn't try to match my garage to the cars. At the time I had 2 maroon-ish red cars and I knew that would change over time (now have bright red, yellow and silver). I went with the black/white/red/gray since I figured those were classic racing colors. I will likely just order the dozen or so white tiles that need replacing and do a super-cleaning on the rest of the floor. Racedeck cleans up pretty well.

My checkerboard is 11x10 and was hell to separate tiles. My 380 sq took 4 hours total and that included assembling the table saw I purchased to trim some pieces on the edge and around center post and stairs. I would seriously consider doing the checkerboard in 4x4 squares right out of the box. You'd be done in no time.

That was definitely my plan from the start, the squares right out of the box are perfect size IMO, wayyyy too busy doing them as 1 x 1 squares. Cars change but the black, white and graphite go with anything.

Here is my checkered floor that I just installed last week. I think it looks fantastic but just a little too cliche for me. I've decided to change it up a bit. Here it is so you can have more ideas though!

I chose a mitte gray and mitte white 2' X 2' pattern. A bright white tile would drive me crazy, but these mitte white tiles have little gray/tan flecks that don't show much dirt.

I went with Racedeck in dark grey and light grey (silver actually).

It has been great for the last 4 years or so. Love it. I did get a puncture from a bolt stuck in the tire of my truck. Need to get another tile to replace someday.

Can't find a pic...

Here is my take on the checkered pattern. I can always play a game of chess at family gatherings.
