Choosing lap siding size

How does one choose the reveal size of their lap siding? The few homes in my neighborhood that have it all have 6", but are typical 8' walls. Being that my walls are 12 foot, that would look to busy IMO. The plan drawings show 18 rows, which put the reveal at 8". My other option is a 10.75" reveal. I'm curious to hear/see what others have done with taller buildings.

I think it depends on the material you chose as your siding. Wood, I would never go more than an 8” reveal and typically 6”. Harde board or similar, 10 plus will be fine since it is dimensionally stable. Frankly anything over 8 on a small building is to much in my opinion.

Personal preference. “Standard” around here is 8-1/4” Hardie which gives you a 7” reveal.

It's whatever aesthetic you want. 4-5" is common here regardless of height. I have 35' tall gables on my house with 5".
