Choosing windows

I am doing some remodeling in my garage. I have two 3X4 windows on the south wall of my garage. These are the only natural light I get into my garage.

I was curious if anyone has used windows near the soffit? I know I would need to put a header above the window so it would most likely be 12" below the soffitt.

I was thinking of something that was wide and not tall. Possibly 3' X 1'. It wouldnt have to open as it would be more for light than venilation. I was planning on doing three along the 28' length of the wall.

Any thoughts or pictures appreciated.

Thanks, Joe

I wanted plenty of natural light in the garage when we built our new home, so I have five 6' x 6' Andersen casement windows (with low-E coating), plus windows in the top panels of the sectional garage doors. The top of the casement windows are 6" from the ceiling (and the soffit on the outside), which is 12'. I have vertical blinds on all of them to control sun load.

I like that you put them up high. Part of my goal is to keep people from looking in to see what I have. I want a 48X18 size...

I have been thinking about an awning type I saw on the Home Depot site last night. It would let air in if needed but give maximum glass area.

I need to get a sketch up to show what I am trying to acheive.

JohnZ I like the idea of the windows in the garage door. Mine is an 8 foot high unit. If I could find something to insert in the top panel that would give light and keep out prying eyes.

Thanks to both of you for your replies.
Joe
