So I have an older Ridgid miter saw and the plastic throat plate is all busted up. I found out it is an obsolete part, so I decided to make a new one. I'm planning on using hardwood, but thought I'd post here to see if anyone has a better idea. Is there some awesome product that I should use instead of hardwood?

Thanks for the help!

Paint stirring sticks, wood or plastic . I tape it down and swap it out if I cut bevels.

I feel a lot more like I do now, than when I got here.

those plastic chopping boards works if you find a good thickness one.... like the $1 or $2 ones from ikea.

haven't made one for the chop saw but have made numerous for the table saw. laminate countertop over MDF or the like makes a nice slick surface, which is important for a table saw, maybe not so much for a chop saw though unless you are sliding long work for repeating cuts...good idea on the cutting board material, dollar stores have those thin little red cutting boards that work good and are only like 3/16" thick.
