Starting with making a chess set, with the pieces made from surplus trencher teeth.
Got started cutting today.

Cobbler,
That is mighty kind of you to say, thank you.

Pontiac,
This set is being gifted to one of my daughters and her family, but I'm sure we can come up with a board.
I have to warn you, I really, really, **** at chess!
I sure would like to have a visit with you, if it works into your schedule and I am in town.

Right on Pontiac,
Got started on the board today.

I thought about using maple and walnut like what is typically done.
But in the name of time management (laziness) and economy of using what's on hand (cheapness) I used some 3mm marine ply drops from another project.

The 3mm ply is too flimsy, so I laminated 2 pieces together.
Made the lower layer 3/8" proud of the top layer, to serve as a tenon into a mortise on the border frame.

This is where it gets a bit cheesy, I opted to stain the squares on the board, knowing it was going to bleed.
Thinking the effect would lend itself to the rustic nature of the project and it did.
Final finish on the playing field will be a heavy dose of epoxy, to provide a good wear surface.

Also got the walnut pieces milled to width and thickness for the playing field border and a box to stow the pieces.
Lastly, cut the dados in them for the bottom and top.

Lastly, set the corner guards on the board to see how they look.
I'm thinking they look like they belong.
Hope to get the board epoxied tomorrow.

Awesome job Royce

Even though you just made the set, it could pass for a vintage/antique set made at the turn of the last century

That's a really nice and creative chess set you've made for your daughter and her family Royce. Quality, hand crafted gifts like what you make immediately have value well beyond your time investment and will be treasured by your heirs forever. Ed.

While waiting for glue to dry, cut some leathers for the bottom of the playing pieces.

Lastly, got the copper corners nailed to the box.
Sure do like the contrast of the copper against the walnut.
