GF and parents keep asking what I want for Xmas. What are some must-haves for a work shop? I have the basics- miter saw, circular saw, table saw, drill press, nail guns... Thinking I would like to pick up a router and kreg jig.

What are some other must-haves? I have been getting by with the basics for a while but would like to expand into some better tools for cabinet making and tinkering.

I hate it when relatives buy me tools as gifts. If that's what they want to do, I tell them that I'd rather have gift certificates so I can pick up something specific that I've been saving for. I let them know that the certificate will put me over the top and let them know that I appreciate them helping me get to my goal.

In that case I will send them the model/part number if it's something specific I want. I hate gift cards because I always forget to use them. GF wont even let me buy any more beer since she always buys me a bunch for xmas :(

Routers are good, I have several. My favourite is the Porter Cable model 100, sadly they stopped making it. Depending what you want to do with it, the model 690, 691 or 693 kit would be a nice choice. When I ran a formica shop, PC tools were the go to brand.

I personally asked the wife for a Kreg jig.

It sounds like you don't drink like I used to. Have you ever seen how much space 365 liters of liquor(or 365 cases of beer) take up ?

Here's 100 cases :eyecrazy:

A large set of router bits.

A set of Forstner bits. I have used them to make scalloped edges on the bases of cabinets.

A good random orbital sander.

Consumables like sandpaper for your soon to be RO sander, various length pocket screws for the Kreg jig. Plugs for the pocket screw holes.

Gift cards for Rockler, McFeeleys, etc. Just don't forget to use them.

For woodworking hand tools consider a set of good chisels and one or two beater chisels, a speed square, a combo square, a framing square, quality screwdrivers, and vintage #4 smooth and #60 block planes that you will tune up.

Kreg jig. Get a basic model and some extra screws. The 2.5" coarse screws work well on 2by wood.

A 1/4" hex impact is a great addition to that ! ;)

I dont ask for tools at Xmas, I ask for prepaid cards. Most women and in-laws dont seem get it. One year I told my wife I could use a good drill and I ended up with a 12v Black and Decker. My inlaws like to get me the latest in Craftsman useless gimmicks like the bionic wrench craftsman edition which i have never been able to use on anything.

Gift cards are nice.

If they want to give presents make lists or you will end up with the latest craftsman multi gizmo.

LOL! That is what happens to me, too! Only thing is, if I tell them I want a craftsman metric wrench set, I end up with a craftsman SAE wrench set. Or if I say I like a certain tool in particular, I end up with everything else but that tool! They are good at getting there, but not good with the details. LOL! I used to wonder why they wouldn't just write down what I wanted, but now I'm used to it. Since they keep wanting to know what I want for Christmas, even hounding me for long lists, but never getting anything on the list, I wonder what is going on in their heads. I usually just say I want gift cards. But they insist on getting me things my brothers want or some "filler" gifts that they found on sale. Sure would save them alot of trouble if they would just listen to me and get me the gift card. LOL!
