rather have polished (or natural, parkerized, etc) that chrome on pliers. When using pliers as a hammer(often tap stuff with them) the chrome chips

If you work on the outside or leave the tools outside or in areas with high humidity or water contact i would choose the plated pliers, or for design reasons, if you have chrome plated ratchets and wrenches then the plated pliers fit better.
Polished for inside a shop where you always have a oily rag to wipe the pliers down.

I prefer black industrial finish or bare steel to chrome plating on all tools, not just pliers. Chrome plating looks great when it's new and cleans up easily, but the benefits of chrome fade quickly with use. And nothing looks worse than flaking or pitted chrome.

Aficantoolman (sp),

You didn't provide any information on the conditions you are working in or how frequently you use your tools. These are important factors to consider when deciding on tool finish.

Do you use your tools indoors, outdoors, or both?

Do you store your tools in a tool cabinet/chest or are they stored in the open?

Do you use your tools daily, weekly, monthly, or even less frequently?

Do you live in a climate that is near the coast, has high humidity, or has extreme temperature changes?

How about giving us some information to work with? The more you can tell us, the better we can respond to your question.

Yes, it was supposed to be Africantoolman, but I didnt double check while registering so the spelling is off.

My tools are usually kept in a roller case and used indoors 90% of the time farr far away from the coast. All DIY work.
I purposefully didnt provide too much info to see what other members thought without being steered by my conditions and seeing why they would choose one over the other.

Thanks for all the responses so far.

one thing I noticed about my Knipex chrome needle nose, and bent nose pliers is that the teeth dont seem as pronounced as the regular versions. They are not as grippy. If I had to get them again I would go with the non-chrome versions, because they have more grip and are cheaper.

Honestly I prefer pliers which do NOT have a chrome finish. It really is not necessary. All you have to do is keep them oiled with WD-40 or whatever and you'll be fine. The main thing is to dry them off after use, oil them when needed and store them in a dry location. That's all there is to it. Rust is only a problem when you are not taking care of them or working in a marine environment or something like that. Then I could see how stainless steel would be preferable, but for normal shop/household/jobsite use I don't think it is needed.
