Long story short:
Wife drives an '05 Pacifica. I put a Mopar hitch receiver on it a couple of years ago. It's a goofy vertical receiver. Now I'd like to install a hitch mounted bike carrier, but to do so they've got an adapter you've got to use to go from the vertical receiver to a normal horizontal type.

I decided I'd be better off just replacing the queer receiver than dealing with the adapters, so I ordered a new horizontal type Mopar receiver online. What was pictured (horizontal type below) isn't what they sent. Instead, I got another goofy receiver just like the one that's already installed.

I contacted the site that sold it to me and they say the new one I ordered (PN 82210069) has been superseded by the goofy one (PN 82211516) that I already have. Now I figure I'm going to have to fight with them for a refund... but meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out if they're feeding me a line, or what I want is still available.

Call the parts dept of your local dealer, bet they would be able to help. I have done so a few times when I needed a part number for something.

Ordered online from where? You should have no problems returning it, assuming it is a 'stand up' seller.

An online search reveals that there are a number of different brand hitches available for this vehicle.

for example, thehitchstore.com has both a Class II and Class III hitches for an '05 Pacifica both with regular horizontal receivers. Send back the one you ordered, tell them it isn't what you ordered and you cannot use it, and order an aftermarket hitch and be done with it.

I'd love to, but I already have the hole cut out of the bumper as seen in the first picture above. The Mopar hitch is the only one I've found that is high enough to utilize the cutout. If I went aftermarket... it would likely hang down below the bumper and have a goofy notch above it.

what does the adapter that goes from the vert to horiz look like?

I'd say just go with that and be done with it... or fabricate your own transition piece.

I doubt Chrysler actually makes that hitch, it likely comes from one of the "aftermarket" manufacturers. The information is pretty good on their websites....Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Reese, Curt and Valley are a few of the majors that come to mind. I would go directly to their sites and check the availability for your vehicle and talk to their tech people. A lot of resellers may not have information for your application as they likely do not see a lot of demand for it.
