This took quite some time, made forms for a hoist, mezzanine mounts and filled the old window frames.

The final product

I hope you enjoyed this update. I was in the planning phase of building the stairs, but I have to shift my priorities for the next few months. This was a big undertaking, keeping in mind I did everything myself. As much as I enjoy the final product, the journey was rewarding. Until next time.. cheers to 2024

The dimensions of the mezzanine are 24x16

The last pic looks like the church is having an event inside with all your cars parked in the back.

Looks like a lot of planning and work went into these last updates.

It definitely is a warm sight when its dark and the lights are on, makes for a nice photo.

Business in the front, car cemetery in the rear :sneaky:

Loved to see the little red Mazda rotary too!

Did the building have a flood at some point back in the day?

The building was vacant for many years prior to me purchasing. I would suspect there was standing water in that basement for a very long time. The foundation was in rough shape because of it..

Great to see an update!

What are your plans for the mezzanine? It looks awfully short above it.

I currently rent a room in the decommissioned school in town, filled with car parts. It costs me 500 a year, relatively cheap and has been a great storage solution in the interim. I needed a long term solution, the original plan was to purchase a 40FT sea container. But my goodness, they are expensive. The idea of building a mezzanine, or a loft was always a vision. I crunched the numbers and the mezzanine came in under 5K CAD which was better than I could find a sea container for. Had better humidity control and makes better use of the building. During the design process, I had to factor in if I was to concrete the floor that I would need to fill up to the base of the original foundation. I would lose a couple feet off the base. I also wanted to keep the original build out and used that base as the height of my floor.

It will serve perfectly for storage, as intended. But if I was to do it again I would have ran the floor joists off the top of the rear entrance door. Giving me an extra foot up top and not compromising much below.

It is very annoying to walk with a hunch or tilt to the head. And has squashed the idea of ever using the space as a loft or a hangout spot. Lesson learned..

Thanks for the questions

How come you ran a stud in front of the window? Are you going to wall over the window?

Martin

The plan is not to sheet over the window. It will stay as-is for the foreseeable future.

I will be moving across the country in the next 6 months. In that time I will finalize the stairs, install track hoists for lifting heavy stuff up top, as well as a vehicle hoist to maximize storage. Followed by filling the place to the 9's with cars/parts and closing the doors for a very, very long time.

This journey will be coming to an end soon, or at least put on pause.

Well that's sad to hear. Hopefully it's a good opportunity coming your way.

I work for the RCAF, posted to CFB Moose Jaw. After a long, and very good run.. my time has come to an end. There is a very likely chance that we will end up in Ontario, Trenton to be specific. The chances of me getting something in that market at this point that can accomodate everything is unlikely.

This will be year 12 in SK. Absolutely loved my time here, will always hold a special part in my heart. The church was the cherry on top. Nice to see someone local, thanks for following along..

There is definitely a sad aspect to it. But this comes at no surprise, it was inevitable. Thankfully I planned appropriately, and the church will last many years with no maintenance.

Looks like I will be coming out your way, the family is excited and there is long term gain to it. This hobby is still in my blood, but I need to shift my priorities for the next few year.

Ohh right, I forgot you'd mentioned you're in Air Force, that makes sense.
Sad to see you go, but I guess that's the way it goes, wishing you all the best going forward, has been a cool build to watch. 👍

Thanks for the updates! What an amazing journey for this old building. I hope it serves you well while you are out east. Next time I'm out that way, I will have to do a driveby.

Good luck with your continued work and your move!

All the best in 2024.
