Cincinnati Royal 16 drill press

Few days a go buy an allien. !!! Found a Royal 16 drill press Do you have any suggestion to restore? I don't have any reference ,pics or diagrams.
Start cleaning first this weekend

Thanks for the photo and the info link. I've never seen one of those in the wild. Is it a Canedy-Otto with Cincinnati sheet metal and badges?

Packard, you are correct. Cannedy Otto was an early builder of drill presses among other machines. "Royal" was a model name of theirs and a particularly nice drill. C-O was bought by Cincinnati Tool after WWII and the d/p's were continued under the CT name until, I believe the 1950's.

thank you very much everyone for the information, now I understand why there is very little information about this drill


the next week I start with the restoration, at this moment I am removing a lot of old grease and dirt greasing the bearings since I could not find similar measure and I do not want or can not rectify some parts for the new bearings

the first pictures are when I found the allien in a tire store (allien = drillm press royal 16

I am going thru my uncles warehouse near Los Angeles, trying to sell some of his equipment for him and came across a Royal 16 drill press. I don't know anything about this type of thing so I googled it and came across this forum. Anyone have an idea where I can sell this bad boy?

Sell it on your local Craigslist. Good thing about that one is the intermediate pulley to get the speed down slow enough for heavy work.

Hi, I was wondering what the hex at the front right next to the handle is for?

I recently accuired a Cincinnati Royal 16 floor stand model. It's in ruff shape but it appears to be complete and seems to work. The problem is the handle to run the chuck is locked and has what looks like a key hole. Is the a way to remove the handle to remove or bypass the lock?

Never heard of one having a lock. Maybe something is jamming the rack/pinion on the quill?

I don’t think that’s a key (for a lock) slot. Keyed to the shaft, maybe.

As noted above, I wonder if that hex in front of the handle is a spindle lock.

Thank you for the suggestion but unfortunately that is not it. Fortunately, I have the original manual that came with the press. That part is described as the quill tension stud. It was loose and not applying any tension. The manual is vague and provides little to no information on the operation of the machine. So if there is any kind of locking mechanism, it is not identified. The manual is primarily specifications, exploded views and parts lists. It may be that the quill is frozen in place and will take some work to free it.

You may be on the right path. Although the rack is clear, it may be that the quill is frozen in place, there is a bit of rust. I will work on that and let you all know how it goes.

I'd start by getting some Kroil in around that quill from top, bottom, etc. The handle shaft would also come out if you take the nut, etc. off on the left end of the shaft.
