I'm thinking about building an addition to my garage. I'm thinking about doing the foundation work myself to save some money. I would pour footings four feet deep but was thinking about a cinder block frost wall as I can do it myself at my own pace. Is this a bad idea? Are materials more or less expensive than a poured conrete frost wall?

Or do I even need a frost wall? Are slabs suitable for a garage in the Northeast?

Im in the midwest and we are required to have footings below the frost line. The stem wall can be poured or concrete block (they're not made of cinder any longer). One thing to consider, and it weighed heavy on my mind when I built mine. If you goof up anything on the foundation , its either A going to cause problems when the framing begins or B) be expensive and/or cumbersome to remove and replace the mistake.

If you still want to attempt, then dont let my comments discourage you. Its just important to factors those into your equation. I would also recommend doing a practice run with small bricks in your back yard. Build a bar-b-q or something. See how straight, square, and plumb your walls come out. There is an art to laying block and it takes some practice to get good at. It would also be helpful if you know someone that can show you the proper way .
