Cinder Block Hole

Hi all,

I've got a problem I can't seem to find a solution for. I've got a 43 year old cinder block foundation. There is an old pipe that runs through the block and out into the yard. Recently snakes have started making their way into the interior of the block and then making their way out the top of the block wall inside.

My initial thought was to just cut the old pipe out and patch the hole. This leaves a 4" diameter hole in a hollow wall so patching is not easy. Any thing I push in just falls about 6 feet to the bottom. Is my best option to just fill the block through the hole until I reach its height? I won't be able to get any rebar in there or anything and I don't want to create larger issues down the road.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If your solution is to patch only you could use something like spray foam against the opposite face of the block and build it up, you may need to give some time between applications to set up so that is creates something you can add some concrete or mortar patch mix to parge into the hole.

I'd rather just replace the block but since it's a foundation wall I'm pretty wary of trying to remove a single and replace it.

Leave pipe in wall and cut flush with wall.
Then fill pipe with concrete or similar mix.
If pipe is gone, mount a outside dryer vent cover to wall. Most Have a damper in them.
If not, cut sheetmetal to fit.

They used to use a wad of newspapers to stop concrete from falling six feet inside a wall. Back when people took the newspaper.

Stuff news paper in the hole. Leave room for an inch or so of mortar. It's that easy

Cut a piece of cardboard slightly larger than the hole. Poke a couple small holes in it & loop a string through it. Fold it just enough to push through the hole, & use the string to pull it up against the inside of the hole. Now fill the hole in the block with mortar, using the cardboard as a back stop. After the mortar dries cut the string & paint, color, etc.........:dunno:

Masons just wad up the concrete bags and stuff them down the core hole to stop the mortar and then fill the hole with mortar. This is what they did for the J bolts for the sill plates. That also gets rid of the bags and keeps them out of the trash. Probably not to code but a lot of houses are fastened down that way.

Master masons that I’ve known always roughed out a plug for each side from an old block and mortared them into place. Neatly done and you can’t tell there was ever a hole. That’s how I do it too.
