Hiya Royce,

Thursday was one of those days where a lot "came together". What I mean by that is that things are remembered, inspections made, and decisions made weighing cost/benefit :)

Cost/benefit is where the lights come in... I had been dead set on a flush mount HO light. My inspector and I were talking about future plans etc, the firewalls, and how that would interact. If you remember, my "give" to the county bldg dept in exchange for small house connected to a big shop was additional fire protection. This comes in the form of two sheets of 5/8th drywall on the ceiling/walls between all living areas. This means any flush mounted lights would have to be boxed in by framing, sheeting, and (2) 5/8's drywall. I just did not believe it to be worth it... I don't lose any clearance as the garage doors come lower than the lights. In the "interior" shop we not only had the same issue, but the garage door is snugged tighter against the ceiling to we were having difficulty figuring out what we would do. However, we finished up the soffits in there last week which gave new light, so to speak. The soffit essentially surrounds (on three sides_ the garage door when rolled up. we will frame a slight angle from the bottom of the soffit to the ceiling/edge'ish of the garage door and then mount a "ring" of HO's on the 3 sides a 'la body shop in a way... Should work out great and make for some great workspace lighting.

Good stuff.

I was on the lift yesterday and we took some random shots. Will post up in a bit.

The "front". Nice shot of "Booger" the 1960 Chevy and his younger brother...

Other side of the "front".

West'ish side. The side you will approach when driving in, though we consider the deckside to be the "front". UPS man is all confused too...

More of the "back".

Damn fine construction. Impressive house. If the garage is under the same roof. Does the car fumes come through to the house let alone the noise ?

Just wanted to say that I have been drooling over this garage since the first time I saw it.. It's completely amazing... Can't wait to see the final product.

Ventilation is covered via multiple fans, one being a 48" exhaust fan in addition to the 4 doors capable of opening up. Most homes here have attached garages and they do not have issues with fumes so I don't expect issues here either.

As for the noise, we are doing some minor things to mitigate noise transfer, but I realize there will likely be some sound transfer into the residence.

Let me knock some files/papers off it so you can actually see them :) The, I'll take some pics...

The rain has been great. Allowing us to spend some time inside maintaining and fabricating. Great time to check for leaks in our building too - we are looking great!

This is an awesome build! Thanks for sharing all the pics. There are a bunch of wives out here who understand and work for the cause!

Any new pics / progress?

Not a whole lot - probably something here or there, but I'll wait until we get the stucco on. We got stalled a bit by needing to add the deck trellis (sp?) and cupola to the structural plans/etc (an oversight on my part as they were post plan additions). We've also been stalled by having to devote more time and resources right now to the ranch.

Showed this thread to the wifey...and she looked at me and laughed...then proceeded to walk away mumbling things to the note of..."in your dreams" and "wish he would stop staring at all those garages..." Haha. Thanks for continuing to post the progress pictures, many of us are living vicariously through them. Keep up the great work!

Hi all,

Sorry for the absence. We have been busy. In fact, the Sacramento Bee did a feature on us in the Food and Wine section today. In lieu of progress pics, I thought I would provide you a good read about what we have been doing.

Thanks for the update, congrats on the article. Cool read.
I'm guessing you net the fish? I would love to see some pics of that operation.

I have a neighbor that bought his wife some buffalo for her birthday. You sir, have reached that level of gift-idea awsomeness.

Again, thanks for sharing.

Great article and awesome home/headquarters. Good luck with finishing your law degree. I know what it is like to work 40+ hours at my job and get a degree. Made it easy for me to take the buyout from GM when all the **** hit the fan 3 or 4 years ago and that is the money I used to build my shop.

Believe it or not, there has been progress as of late. Our stucco man has been on the job and dancing with the weather. Scratch coat is on and a few plan checks have been approved - progress... Brown coat next week/week after and working on color selection along with choosing wood looking thingies for the windows and doors. Deck BBQ bar got all sealed up, pans put in as well (it was an addition so we had some improv to do).

I'll see what I can do for pics here as well. Thanks for sticking with me on it. We will finish it one day :)

Question for all - we built an outdoor shower (so to speak, designed to hose of the hounds really) and we will be doing an imperfect smooth for our finish on the stucco. I am considering how I want to finish this outdoor shower area. Initially, I thought I would go tile, but have been leaning toward stucco now with the pan (backsplash too?) being tile? Even thought about the pan being a concrete or something as well? While we like things to look nice, function comes first for us in general. Thoughts?

Have you considered colored/stamped concrete?

We will be using concrete finishes throughout. In the downstairs, the flooring is a scored, stained, and sealed concrete. The deck surface and the surrounding hardscape will also be stamped and stained concrete. that said, when I thought about using it for the shower walls (if that is what you were suggesting), it just seemed like overdoing it?

This might give you some ideas. The print version was much more informative visually. (obviously) www.lowescreativeideas.com/OutdoorShower
