Circuit breaker acting funny

I just installed a new sub panel. Today I received a new circuit breaker 110 AMP GE to put at the main box, THQL21110 GE 2P 110A 240VAC GE THQL Circuit Breaker. The breaker I received springs back to the tripped position at all times. It will not stay in the On position at all. I'm talking about uninstalled in my hand. Could this possibly be right. Might there be something I have to do to get it to work like remove some safety after install.

Iv already sent an email to the company requesting a new one.

This may sound stupid to ask but did you flip it all the way to off to reset it then flip it to on? (Breakers are sold in the trip position and need to be flip to "off" to reset) If so it sure sounds like a dud to me.

Yes. I'm going back out to check but I believe it wont even stay in the off position.

Make sure you toggle it all the way off, you'll hear a click. Then back on. If that doesn't do the trick, she's a no good.

Just checked it will hold in the off position but will not stay in the on at all. Hope I can get a new one this was a PIA to find a 110 Amp size.

Sounds like the breaker is DOA

110a is an odd size.

What size wire do u have?

Yes it was the biggest one I could use for #2 wire. Hard to find that size breaker so I hope I can get another one. If they send me another one from the same batch I may have a problem.

Not sure why that is functionally worse than this, which is a purchased part for an "industrial" screw-in breaker panel.

breaker lock on devices are legally required in some cases and have nothing whatever to do with the breakers ability to trip.

Other then looking like a hack job, it is not dangerous, unless someone used a screw long enough to contact live parts.

I think if the screw was long enough to have contacted live parts, things would be a slightly different color in that picture :)

I would think that if a breaker wasn't allowed to trip, that the wiring would melt and cause a fire.:shocking:

Unless it is a very obsolete breaker, it is "trip free" the handle cannot be held closed on a fault, there is no issue and as said in earlier posts legally required in some applications. There is no safety issue whatsoever.
