Had a friend of a friend that is a electrician install my circuit breaker box and meter base. I wanted to make sure it was right for the electric company and didn't miss anything. Well I went out and inspected his work.he mounted the box upside down and said it normal to do that and there is no codes since the breakers throw side to side. I'm ok with it just thinks it's odd. Electric is coming out in ten days and just wondering if I should change it back or leave it. Would make him put it right but I'm done with him.

According to cutler hammer, it can be mounted either way, so there is no such thing as upside down.

What do you mean you're done with him?

It was a cash deal and done with the box. He did fine work just probably won't use him again because I plan to wire the rest.

It's not upside down and sure beats having the cables run through the panel gutters to reach the lugs if they were at the top.

That is the proper orientAtion. Unlike Canada though, our boxes cannot be mounted sideways as if the switch is vertical, "down" must always be off.

I prefer the main breaker on the bottom if it is fed from the bottom, keeps the big service wires out of the gutters.

I have that same panel in my garage for the house and another in my shop. Both are mounted similarly but for no apparent reason. In the garage, the service comes in from the top and has to travel to the bottom. In the shop, service comes up from under ground. So I don't know why he did that. Probably an electrician thing.

Panel is fine like that...if the breaker was vertical and installed upside down then u would have an issue...

There is no "upside down" or right side up, with that panel, the installer has a choice the main at the top or bottom.

I mounted mine "right side up" and then had the service enter from the lower back and had to run the heavy service wires up the gutter on each side. Looks crazy, its a main lug and could have been inverted, but this would have left me very little room at the top where virtually all of the circuits and conduits exit. Mine is a Siemens and they don't give you much "gutter" if you call it that at the "bottom" between the bottom most breakers and the bottom of the can.

I tossed the idea back and forth many times and temporarily hung it both ways before I ended up with final installation. The OP's installation is just fine however.
