I'm hoping a licensed electrician can give me some tips. This isn't my garage; it is in my kitchen (the house was built in the early 1990s in California, if that matters for the code standards the electrician should have used at the time).
I have a 15 amp circuit breaker that will periodically pop IF all the lights are on in my kitchen. It doesn't happen always. For the past 16 years, to avoid the problem, we just don't turn on all the lights. But we plan to sell the house and the realtor wants all the lights on & of course we want everything to work.
The circuit breaker is a tandem 15a/15a Challenger Type A Two Pole J721.
I added up the current draw, and I come up with more like 18 amps. I may not be doing this correctly as there is a combination of incandescent floods, florescent tubes, and low-voltage lights all on this circuit breaker, and I may not be doing the math right.
Let's say I *am* doing the math right. Is there a way for me or a licensed electrician to determine if it is OK to replace the 15a/15a with a 20a/15a tandem breaker?
Or, if it is not feasible, I guess I can pull out a bunch of 75w floods and replace them with 65w or 40w, but I need help in determining if I'm doing the math right with the flourescents & low voltage lights.

So, by my math, that adds up to 2224 watts. Divide by 120 volts and you get 18.58333 amps on a 15 amp circuit breaker.
Am I doing this right? Because there are 4 low voltage 50w 12 volt spots, do I need to find the transformer instead?
OK, so... in the Challenger panel, all the breakers are tandem units. Most are 15a/15a, some are 20a/20a and a few are 15a/20a.
There are no more slots open in this box (I have another box in the garage).

- 11 60w PAR 16 narrow spot bulbs, which adds up to 660 watts
- 10 75w floods; that adds up to 750 watts
- 3 120w floods that adds up to 360 watts
- 6 30w flourescent tubes, adding to 180w
- 6 8w flourescent mini tubes adding 48w
- 2 13w flourescent tubes = 26w
- 4 50w 12 volt low voltage spots = 200w; do I need to look at the transformer instead?
