Physical size, no, you can go as big as you want. But if it has more than 6 handles, it must include a Main breaker or disconnect so that all power to the structure can be killed with one throw.

Ok, thanks. Mine is missing the cover plate and door, and I'm not sure those can be found by themselves easily/reasonably.

For a recently made (say 10 years) panel from a major manufacturer (Square D, Cutler-hammer, GE, Siemens, etc), you can get replacements for just about any part through an electrical supply house locally or online. But for an older or less popular brand of panel, yeah, probably just easiest to replace.

What is a ballpark cost on a 6-breaker one? Can you point me to a good online one?

6-space interior (not weatherproof) sub-panels run about $20. For example,

I haven't used that 6-space one personally, so there may be better ones out there, but I do have a Square D Homeline 24-space panel in my house with no complaints so far. There are many brands to choose from besides Square D Homeline -- Square D QO, Murray, Cutler-Hammer, Siemens, etc. I have a GE panel out in my shop that works fine, and GE breakers are dirt cheap (like $3!). Just look for a "Main Lug" or MLO panel. You can even get one with more than 6 spaces, for example you could get an 8-space panel and install two double-pole breakers or install handle ties on two pairs of single-pole breakers to get back down to 6 throws.
