Using GFCI was not a mistake, in fact not using them probably would have been one. Your mistake was just in wiring them without knowing how GFCI (or AFCI, same deal) breakers are wired. They did what they were supposed to do, you didn’t create a dangerous situation and you leaned something new.My mistake here was I used GFCI breakers. Had I not, I would have been fine with the way I had it wired.
