Found what looked like a German socket set (Chrom-Vanadium stamp) bearing the CK name at a pawn shop today. Turns out it was, but that's just about all I've found out here and elsewhere on the internet. Only found two posts on GJ...

It's the 1/4" drive 39 piece set. Comes with a ratchet, case and some accessories, but what made it attractive was a large set of bit sockets. See it here: http://www.cktoolsdirect.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=2_54&product_id=1500

Ratchet feels decent, but apart from that and the two GJ threads (one guy likes their screwdrivers, one guy hates a CK ratchet...), I don't have much to go on. Can't decide whether or not to pull the trigger. The set is in very good condition -- price tag of 50 bucks. What do you think?

One potential downside I'm thinking is that they give you no regular Torx, just tamperproof.
I suppose the idea is that you can use a tamperproof tool for a regular application, but I'm thinking that extra hole in the middle will make the tool more likely to shear.

Speaking purely as a guy who sometimes has to really crank on some Torx.

I've seen Lowes' Kobalt brand play the same game.

I'm pretty sure they just re-brand other makes of tools.

My father used to sell a big range in his hardware shop and it was a mix of Far East and European manufactured tools. All good quality though.

they were widely available in the UK, I have a set of their insulated pliers, my wife bought a set of strippers, needle nose, side cutters and linesman pliers for over thirty years ago, these items were made in JAPAN. They have had a lot of use and are still going strong

I bought a set of CK electrical insulated screwdrivers in 2000 - they did a lot of work but started to get worn and chipped on the blade ends by 2004, so replaced them with Witte. The Witte set, ten years later, are still going strong.
