I found this set on the local CraigsList and scooped it up for $35.00.

It's PN# 9-52096. All the parts are there with a manufacturer's mark of VM and made in the USA. Not sure who this is. I'm doubting it is Danaher, ca. 1998 -??

I believe the Craftsman logo on the case puts it in the 70's. This particular set # didn't show up in the catalogs until 1975. So I'm assuming after 75 and before 80??

If anyone within the GJ Collective can narrow down the maker and possibly the years I would appreciate it.

Also, since this is my first tap & die set can anyone recommend what to put on it to keep it from rusting during infrequent use? Coat in 10w30, ATF, 3 in One, FluidFilm????

Regards,
Chris

I've found that LPS-2 does a decent job of rustproofing. Its not quite the same "going into storage for 5 years" type of film you get with LPS-3 but it does impart some protection.

This one has me a little stumped as they say darn if can find VM when I need it.:dunno:

The Funny thing is a long time ago I must have come across it and because I post a lot; it must be in one of my older posts just not sure?

Anyhow op Vermont made a lot of taps & dies for craftsman back in the day.

Wish I was of more help to you.

That looks familiar, I have the fractional set I bought in the late 70's and the Vermont American brand metric set I bought while working at an auto parts store. The Craftsman set is marked with the VM stamp.

Try looking at the reference card that came with it. A lot of times, printed material with have a copyright date on it. While it may not be exact, it should give you an approximate.
