Hey all, found this tool chest on CL and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this tool chest? It's a huge chest combo for the price, makes me think something fishy is going on - either it's a cheapo or stolen or something. Although it looks like they have a bunch of new items in the background of the second pic. Thanks in advance for any info.

i saw the exact same listing up here in new england so perhaps its a scam. they never responded to my inquiry either.

Anyway its the same box that Sams Club use to sell for 800ish or there abouts. Would be a good deal if it were legit.

Thanks for the info  I've seen it in the Cincy and Louisville CL, but people put ads up in both areas all the time. Good to know not to waste my time on it.

Even if it wasn't a scam "which it is" it would already be gone by the time you got to it.

Has anyone actually called on it and checked it out? Maybe, maybe it's legit.

What are they trying to pull? Do they want to get your bank info and have you wire money to Nigeria or what? I'd think that by now, everybody's SOP on craigslist would be: email > phone call > face-to-face transaction with cash. I know that that's the ONLY way I'll deal on cl. Seems pretty much foolproof to me.

Again... has anyone called on this? Got a number?
If this many people have seen this exact ad in various parts of the country, do you actually expect this to be legit? If it's legit, they would reply to an inquiry. Give it a shot yourself and let us know how that goes. Might want to use a throw-away email address, so you don't start receiving spam shortly after contacting them

Its just a way to fish for your email address and then you start getting slammed with spam.

I see these kinds of too good to be true ads all the time. They rarely have a local phone number or address listed and just urge you to email them. Then they have you. If they are lucky they can entice you to give your address and phone number too.

This is the sams item # 76659, appears to be sold out in our area, double check your club when you login. I think it is 799.00. My friend has one and likes it. Can't beat the price.

Ahh, thanks for the info. I'm not a Sam's Club member, and the nearest one is an hour away. Maybe I can get someone I know up there who is a member to go with me to check it out. I've read about the ones at Sam's Club being a decent setup for the price.

They don't show any in San Antonio area. When my friend bought his it was in only one of the 5 sams in the area. You will have to search around. Call Sams club with the item # and they can do a search for you. After you locate it maybe a friend can get it for you.

Do you realize how condescending you sound? Hear me out, please...

I never said it was legit. I was just curious to see if anyone had ever received a response from the ad poster, or what they had found out. I asked for a number, and no one has produced one. I personally, have not been able to find the ad anywhere in my area today. No one has yet posted a link to an ad either. If, and that's a big if, it's legit, it could be some sort of close-out, scratch-and-dent, inventory liquidation, etc. That's all I was trying to figure out.

I'm fully aware of the concept that "if it sounds too good to be true, then it must be", but sometimes, sometimes there are good deals to be had.

Remember a couple months ago at Home Depot? The $100 shop-vacs that were clearanced for $20?

It happens. Not often, but it happens.

Sure do - it was intentional, because you seemed to really want to believe this ad was legit. A little tough love, if you will. Did you see Skin's post - he said they never responded to him. I don't need much more validation than that (plus everyone saying they've seen the exact same ad) to tell me it's some sort of scam.

What number are you asking about? A phone number for the seller? I doubt that exists. Or are you talking about a CL ad number? If so, here are links to the ads I found in my area.
http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/tls/1942438208.html
http://louisville.craigslist.org/tls/1954921254.html
http://nashville.craigslist.org/tls/1934215131.html

Not sure where everyone else is located, but run a CL search for "23 drawer" using a min and max price of $500. The exact ad comes up in many different cities, dating back approximately a month (likely because older ads are expired and don't show up in search results).

Again, give it a shot, let us know how it turns out. If you score a good deal, I'll humbly apologize for sounding condescending.

I have no intention of buying one, don't need one, don't have room for one, and I'm personally not interested in one. I'm merely looking to either put the myth to rest or determine if it's real.

I just saw a lot of people, in a lot of different areas, talking about them, and was curious to know if it's just an urban legend. Then, we'd all know if it was worth tracking down for the sake of all the members who may be in the market for an new or additional box.

I did see Skin's post and his comment that they never responded to him. Thought maybe since that was the only person to comment about inquiring, that maybe it was an isolated situation.

Don't really need your "tough love". We can sit around and talk about it or somebody can find out the story behind the ad.

As for a "number", I was referring to a phone number. Personally, I've never bought or sold on Craig's List. But I have browsed on there in larger suburban areas, and I've never seen anything I wanted, at such a good deal it warranted driving two or more hours to get to. But sometimes I travel to Chicago or Indianapolis, and would be willing to look into it and share the findings with the members here.

So much for trying to help out the board members.

I'm truly sorry if it was so upsetting to you that you felt compelled to "school" me. Sure wish I knew you before I turned 40, you could have made my life so much easier.

Relax guys, I can assure you that it is in fact a SCAM.

I stumbled across a CL add for a dewalt 9 tool combo kit for $400 and inquired. It took forever for them to get back to me but sent me a link to their site. It was www.halfoffmart.com. Their site had tons of deals that sounded too good to be true but it looked legit and I was interested.

I was too busy to pull that one off so I looked into their payment terms. ONLY way was with a "money pak" or they would take a credit card with a picture of your drivers license. They claimed they did this because they had a lot of "charge backs" from the credit card companies. I wasn't comfortable paying with anything but a credit card and had no interest in sending a copy of my drivers license. The site said they were located near DC and I was thinking about getting a trailer and going with cash to pick up a couple of the boxes and a dewalt 9 tool combo kit or two. No way to get scammed if you show up with cash right? Well it's about 10 hours drive for me and I didn't want to risk going there to find nothing.

Well a couple of months later I tried to look at the site out of curiousity... No longer in existance. I googled it and found a site where a ton of people had been scammed complaining about them. They post on CL and entice people with a great deal that doesn't seem absolutely rediculous and lure them in with a phony web site. They apparently answer the 800 number on their site and act like a real business.

Sorry I know this is old, but I am seeing this same exact posting on craigslist here lately in TN. Just re-reaising the awareness, be smart out there.

Most of the time if they dont post a # I dont bother with it. Especially when they only post stock photos and no real ones.

It pops up every so often here in WI too. Didn't know if it was a scam or just a repost because the guy couldn't unload it.

I believe Sams club had a clearance on them selling them for about $600 or so I read online.

They are probably on Craftsman quality level just stainless.

Used to be that most postings like that were scams to get people to wire money or get your bank account information. However, many of those type ads are now just used to generate known good email addresses in particular geographic areas. When you respond to an ad, the original poster has a presuably good email address from a specific CL posting area. Amass enough of those addresses and they sell for $50-100 in large bundles of addresses. Annoying but potential lucrative for people using a combination of automated tools and cheap labor.

Indeed it is a scam. I received an email message from them today... I expect others who have responded to their CL posting over the past month or so will receive the same. I attached a screen shot of their message. The link you see in their message is a bogus website... "http://overstockchristmassales.com" does not exist. At least I could not find it on the web nor will a search engine find it. Also payment for items is only thru Green Dot MoneyPak and has to be made by the 16th of Dec.

Haven't read all the responses but yes this is a scam. I gota reply from him years ago & he asked to buy it through his Ebay ad & included a link to a very professional looking fake ebay page.

I tried to toy him along via email but no go.

These are going around again.
Warning SCAM SCAM SCAM... do your part and flag them on Craigslist.

I fell for it and emailed them... they sent back links to:

art-typo.com
overstockflashdeals.com
overstockliquidationdeals.com
overstockliquidationpromos.com
overstockliquidationsales.com
overstockonlineclearance.com
overstockonlinediscounts.com
overstockonlinepromos.com

always a good idea to sites that seems suspicious through the following:
ssllabs.com
urlquery.net
virustotal.com

a red flag when a site doesnt use SSL / HTTPS (in this case they arent serving malware, but phishing for your CC# and Personal information)

I mainly pissed because I want that old school Sam's club box! :)
