I had a post up before that got lost in the database debacle so here goes again.

Hey all, I’m a long time lurker, occasional poster.
I’m in the midst of re-doing my 23’x19’ shop. I’m dealing with a shop full of tools for woodworking and metal work. And a whack of stuff left by the previous occupant.
The space doesn't have to accommodate cars, just a couple of street motorcycles.
The space has a flat roof which is challenging for headroom overhead storage. Layout-wise it has two 8’ wide over head doors and 36” passage door. One challenging factor is that there is a pillar halfway width-wise and about 13 ft from the front wall.

I’m in the process of re-wiring and boarding the interior. So far I have one and half walls done. Working around all of the stuff was driving me crazy so I rented a container which arrived on Monday. Happy days!

A few pics will give you an idea of the chaos I’m trying to tame.

Today's progress.

Slow start today as I had drop off a load of recycling at the recycling centre then hit the lumberyard.

But I did move all of the wood leaning against the wall into the storage container.

Bought wood to sheet the walls and build interior walls to separate motorcycle parking.

Ran electrical and sheet the wall. I really dislike drilling overhead. Especially when I’m all sweaty and the wood chips stick. Ugh.

Started to layout where the interior walls will go.

Keep at it! and good luck... I am too embarrassed to post up pics of my space but am in the process of buying a sea can to move some of the contents offsite. If it is any help I will be down visiting from Kamloops in a month or so and can find some room in my truck for your lathe and that sweet Record vise :)

Soooo glad my address isn’t shown!

Yeah the lathe... would it make it worse if I told you that I bought it from the original owner, it’s a 1975 model and it still has the scraping marks the full length of the ways? [emoji14]

I love that vise!

More space was claimed today.
Built one of the two walls that will create the dedicated motorcycle space.
I want to minimize the dust and what not that accumulates on them so I’m enclosing what amounts to basically an 8’ wide by 9.5’ long space for the bikes.

Still need to build the wall at the front of the space. It will have a pocket door but I haven’t figured that part out yet.
The side benefit of this is that I gain two wall spaces which will be most welcome.

To end the day I moved the mill to close to where it will end up. Definitely need to prioritize making adjustable legs as it rocks in this location. Mind you I hate the stand it came with so perhaps an entirely new stand is in order.

Thanks! I’ve been fortunate and lucked into some great deals.
1965 Unisaw with the cast iron motor cover: $200
1975 South Bend 10K 48” bed lathe from original owner: $1000. It’s super minty and still has the original scraping marks on the ways.
The mill was also a deal. It has a 24” x 9” table. I just did a 1.5 hp 3-phase motor conversion on it. Really like how it runs now.

Well let me just be the first one in this thread to say: you ****! :)

Seriously though, nice lathe. Would love to see some more photos of it when you get the chance.

Focused on some yard work today but did manage to get the lathe moved to its new home.
It’s light enough that I can lift each end of the table to put a 1” piece of plywood under each the legs at each end.
The legs are wide enough that I can slip the forward legs of my engine hoist under the lower table runners and then take the plywood out leaving the lathe sitting on the legs of the hoist.
Five minutes later and it’s in place.
Moving the mill was 10 times more difficult because the balance point is forward so it wants to tip forward.

Thanks!
The seller of the Woden took forever to get back to me. In the meantime I found a mint #3 Record.
The seller of the Record had this fantastic shop. A retired farmer he'd taken to restoring machines. Had the full range of metalwork tools, presses, brakes, shears, and about a dozen welder. I spent almost 2 hrs chatting with him. In doing so I made a contact for work that I can't do, such a stuff that needs to be bent using a brake.

Here's my new Record vise.

Getting set to launch into the next phase of "hiding that ugly insulation with less ugly plywood'.
With luck by the end of the day, I will have sheeted the wall on the left and the wall beside the half-finished/started YZ125.

Made a bunch of progress over the past week or so.
This is where I'm at now.
I cut two ft off the end of the grey workbench so that I can put my Unisaw and upright bandsaw against that wall.
It's coming together now... at least I can see the blinkin' floor...

Last night I finally got the second motorcycle (on the left) into the dedicated space.
What a difference it makes not having to maneuver around it.

First off, glad to see another Canadian here.

I feel your pain on trying to claim more space back. I put lots of overhead cupboards in mine to free up the floor. Speaking of which I need to get off this thing, go make a pot of coffee and hit my garage again....I am tripping over differentials and plan to bring in two more shortly.

Another weekend of progress.
Emptied all the drawers in the bench and reglued them. 40+ year old bench has seen better days.
Pretty pleased with how things are coming together.

Built the wall that separates the motorcycles from the shop area.

Next up is build the door frame and hang the door.
Originally I thought I’d put in a pocket door. I thought about the framing for a pocket door and how it would limit what I could hang on the wall. So I’m going with a standard 2-8 door that will open toward the drill press.

I might be a bit late to make this suggestion but if you look in my build below you will see what I called my 'storage wall'. Instead of sheathing both sides of your dividing wall only do one or the other side and then put shelves between the studs. It saves a lot of lumber and gives a bunch of storage for no additional floor space.

no neat sig line

That’s a good idea. Sadly it’s all sheeted in.
The plan is to move all the riding gear into this new separate space. Helmets, jackets, boots etc. I’ll put up some shelving and hooks on the new wall to accommodate all the gear.

Made the door frame and hung the door today.
Really happy with how the space is shaping up.

Garage/ shop is looking good!

Unfortunately for me, mine is back to looking almost like your first pic. I can access my fab/welding table and drill press.
What year is your YZ125? I bought a new one in 1974 and spent enough on it over the next 2 years that I could have bought 2 more new ones! Water cooled 2-strokes rendered mine uncompetitive; 6 broken ribs in my back from a wreck rendered me uncompetitive.

Thanks. I’ve been coping with the disaster for near four years so it’s really satisfying to have it come together.

It’s a 2000 model. I bought it assuming it needed a top end job. Turns out it had a seized crank.
Found an NOS OEM crank and cylinder and I’m putting it back together. I don’t think I’ll be keeping it though as I have another project bike in the wings, 1988 Honda NT650 Hawk.

Here’s my final shop frontier.
b275bff44b63dafac94b7ad37fdc9444.jpg

This is where the shelves are relative to the interior wall I built to corral the motos.
1d96f076f3ab5de3c862fbbed2ba0610.jpg

Firs step in getting rid of the shelves is to remove all the cr@p.
The floor in now impassable but it’s temporary.
f88f7dfc2b2e9127f576b82c10a62a5a.jpg

Then dismantle the shelves and recover a hundred or so deck screws.
4f5d07596fd7fe16c71f9475517ed11e.jpg

All gone!
3f4ee6e66cae680480804f04c0ce1b32.jpg

Peeled off the nasty Saran Wrap plastic and put up proper 6 mil poly.
Still have to run outlets in the wall but it’s almost done!

This time tomorrow the whole shop will be wired, sheeted and painted.

And so here’s the progress to date.
Everything is sheeted. And the first bit of shelving is up.

Love that plywood for the walls. So much more durable than sheetrock and perfectly in character with a working shop. Any thoughts to hitting it with a light toner to make the grain 'pop' and/or a couple of coats of satin poly to get a little more reflectivity? Would go a long way toward making the space feel brighter. Speaking of which, if I were you I would bite the bullet and spray the ceiling white for the same reasons. Another cool effect with a ceiling like that is to paint it all matte black as you see in many reclaimed warehouses but I think your height is a bit low for that. The white will again help to brighten things up, reflect light and generally make that low headroom less noticeable.

I’m actually painting the interior white. Just a little behind in my pics.

Spraying the ceiling is definitely in my plans. Not looking forward to that job as it will be more chaos. But the end result will be worth it!
