Got me a manual ratcheting pipe threader for gas pipe.

Looks like it'll do the trick for small projects but I'm having a problem holding the pipe secure. I've got a 6" vise that barely holds 3/4" when cranked down as tight as I can go.

Is there a better way? Some different jaws I can put in the vise or something?

Clamp the pipe in your vise and then put a pipe wrench on the pipe so the wrench handle hits the bench and keeps the pipe from turning, the vise won't need to be very tight at all to just hold the pipe.

Yep two pipe wrenches works like a champ.

Clamp the pipe in your vise and then put a pipe wrench on the pipe so the wrench handle hits the bench and keeps the pipe from turning, the vise won't need to be very tight at all to just hold the pipe.

Here is a nice vintage one from my group of vises. Keep your eyes open for one near you. I paid $15 for this one and spent a few minutes cleaning it up. Really works great. Bolt or screw it down to your workbench when needed. Or bolt it to a board with a cleat in the bottom and then clamp the cleat into your regular bench vise.

timewarp had a great suggestion.

(I'll try to fix the pic later)

A pipe vise is a great thing to have, I have a couple but here is one I set up for use in the receiver sockets on the welding table.

Sorry don't have a pic handy, but it is in the video of building the mounts.

Thanks all. Saw the pipe vices, but people want $200+ for them. Not really something I want to purchase or store for a few fittings every couple of years.

Never thought about putting a pipe wrench on it. So simple, and I think it'll do the job nicely for the amount of threads I plan to cut. Knew the folks at GJ would have a good suggestion!
