I picked up a few tools that my grandfather had in his garage a few months ago after he passed away and this one has me kind of stumped. I know it’s a magnetic pick up tool, but was wondering if it was made with a specific purpose in mind? Seems kind of short for what it is, but I can’t find anything online about it at all.

Yeah that thread was really the only thing I could find online about them. Tried looking through some of the stuff he had dug up, but it wasn’t the easiest to see on my phone. I’ll have to look more tonight.

If I had to guess a specific purpose, my guess would be that it is to retrieve valve spring keepers. Clark-Feather made many valve tools both self branded and branded by Blue Point, Herbrand, Cornwell, Blackhawk, Craftsman, and others. Those keepers could be a challenge to get off the valve stem, and an even bigger challenge to keep from dropping them.

I did find a lot of valve tools and cylinder hones on eBay from CF so could be. My grandfather wasn’t much of a mechanic though. He spent most of his career doing carpentry and doing gutters. I managed to get his old soldering irons that they would leave in a fire to get them hot enough to melt the solder. Could just be something he picked up somewhere to use for something else.
