In the market for a new box, I've outgrown my krsc40 cart at home. I don't use my tools at home as near as much as I use too. So anyway I sold the cart and was going to use the money and just get a bigger HF 72 this weekend. But I stumbled upon a classic 96 on Craigslist. Asking price of 2000.00

It's been there a while as I'm sure it's a tough sell, in our area snap on dealers are pretty aggressive with new pricing. Coworker of mine just got a kcp1422 for 3300.00 on truck credit!!

Would you pony up the extra money and get it? Or go with the HF?

I'm going to make him an offer if he accepts it. I'll get it.

My question to you guys is What's the max you would pay for a couple year old classic 96 in pretty good condition? And what do you think it's worth?

Even at $2000 it's not a bad price. The HF 72" is a good value but the SO box is better built and should be 2" deeper. I'd offer the guy $1500 and if he's willing to negotiate a bit and you end up paying $1700 or $1800 for it, you'll be very happy. BTW, what color and trim combo is the SO and do you have a pic or two?

It's red and chrome or aluminum trim. It looks fairly decent shape haven't seen it in person looks like it's in a home garage. I was thinking 1500 myself if he takes it I'll buy it for that price. Yeah 17 and 18 are even good price for it. But at that price it becomes almost a luxury vs a need for me at home.

Go there with $1500 cash, offer $1300 at first...that way you have some wiggle room to come up if needed. Stand your ground at $1500, show him the cash and tell him that's all you brought.

I found this video regarding the Classic 78 interesting, never really watched any Snappy media before.

I actually like how they call out Mac and Matco directly, repeatedly. Not that I have anything against those brands, I just tire of vague comparisons with "other manufacturers."

Interesting too near the end they make a big deal of how well they paint the interior, but there was that one kid on here who got roasted for complaining that the interior of his cart was unpainted and rusting. Sure, not identical product but generally with a brand like Snap On you should be able to assume that certain QC practices apply across the board. edit: I tried briefly but couldn't find the cart thread

Now my new question is would you go buy this box for 1500? Or save the 500.00 and buy a 72 HF... Mind you this is for my home garage and I probably only will be in the box once or twice a month at this point in my life... Maybe occasionally more often depending on projects

I just can't see spending that much on 54" with friction slides, but that's just me.

edit: apologies still thinking of the 78, not the 96!

I would buy the Snap on hands down over the HF. Especially for 1500 if you can get it for that. I thought the HF 72" was 1199 or 1099 now. Is it on sale for 999? Also the Menards Masterforce 72" is a fantastic box. I think it retails for 1499 and i think the 11% off is going on right now.

The snapon for 1500 well worth it if good clean/tidy condition, would easily sell for pretty much same so you potentially not loosing money on it if need sell up at some point .
Only thing I don't like about them is too many deep drawers for mechanic tools .
HF okay for best coupon price but I never want pay full price for their boxes plus you need see you buying best factory model version.
The masterforce is nice (but again too many deep drawers pending on tooling you storing) and 24" depth like the snapon .

I'd let the layout choose. 96 can store a lot more wrenches racks and hanson trays in a single drawer being a 2 bank. On the other hand the HF 72 has handier drawers for smaller odds and ends. HF also has better casters if its doing any rolling.
