For sure it's fabrication. Nice job.
Are these a big thing now? I had a guy ask me to make him a steel one recently:

He added the marquee and controls after.

Would love to see what you built but Photobucket won't show the image.

I've been thinking of building a make cabinet for my other shop when I build it. I've already got a Ms Pac Man arcade sitting in the living room at my house. It's lots of fun to watch kids play it and watch their frustrations as they play. By the way don't ever try to play against me, it just not fair :)

Thanks, Dave

Technical difficulties today I guess. I believe I have it posted but its not right-side up now. If anyone knows how to adjust that, feel free, or let me know. Thanks and sorry.

very cool! I've built 2, one from scratch, one from an old cabinet, but I just use a PC.

couple questions, since I'm considering building another using the rasp PI.

how do you interface the controls? both my builds use an opti-pac for the one with a trackball and J-pac for the other. are those compatible with the rasp Pi?

did you buy plans for your cabinet or design it yourself? when I did mine from scratch I had over $250 just in materials, all the metal L-brackets and proper screws were surprisingly expensive (68 brackets and 275 screws since the ones that come with the brackets are too long)!!

I used the Ultimarc plans from Cybertech designs with the flip down slide out keyboard drawer.

OK looking at your pics I see how you used 1x instead of L-brackets. I am stealing that design for my next one!

Yours look great. Nice work.

To answer you questions:

1. I used a USB button and interface kit from Amazon. It is called Easyget, the link is below. I know Optipac will work with RP but I don't know about JPac. The kit I used was cheap and easy to to connect. RertoPie recognized it as a SNES controller. RetroPie lets you configure individual buttons to be anything you want. The arcade emulator lets you configure buttons for coins, 1-Player, 2-Player, etc.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WAY9848/?tag=atomicindus08-20

2. I drew up my own plan. Basically figure out a side profile you like, draw it on a sheet of MDF and cut it. Figure out the width you like and frame the sides using furring strips. Fill in the blanks as go along to make room for control panel, screen, etc.

As you saw, I used angle brackets with furring strips and ordinary drywall screws. Primary materials were: The Easyget kit, RaspberyPie, cables, a 19 inch LCD monitor (craigslist, $5), 1 sheet of 3/4 MDF, half sheet of 1/2 MDF, furring strips, angle brackets, 3/4 plastic t-molding, some Plexiglas, some Formica for the control panel, couple of LED light bulbs and sockets, plugs and wire, primer and paint.

This thing can come apart in 15 minutes for moving. I did so because I made and painted it in my garage to be moved to its final location in the basement. Much easier to move individual pieces. All told, I spent less than $250. I already had all the tools so there was no tool expense.

sweet thanks for the link!

what do you think of the quality of the joysticks and buttons? as good as HAPP (actual arcade)? I do wear out a few micro switches each year on the main buttons and joysticks but they are easy to replace on the HAPP's.

are those 4/8way joysticks the lift and turn type or are they always 8-way?

prices sure have come down since I built the first one in '02...

This is awesome. What kind of classics are you playing? Is this like pacman type games. How does the Rasberry Pi run them? Is it choppy or smooth? I'm sure you probably can't get into the early 90's stuff with it can you? Like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter?

They are definitely not Arcade quality buttons, but they seem pretty sturdy.
The joysticks are always 8-way.

The games are smooth, no choppiness.

If you google "retropie ROMS" you can get all kinds of links for ROMS (games). 80s, 90s, 2000s.

Retropie uses emulators for MAME, Atari, Nintendo, Wii, Playstation, Sega, etc. You can get all kinds of games for each system. Check this link: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/

As far as what kinds of games I am playing, LOL, I am not a gamer at all. I only even KNOW of Galaga, Pacman, Donkeykong. SpaceInvaders and Frogger. I **** at all of them. My daughters have a Wii and XBox S but I don't have a clue as to how those work.

I was concerned about the buttons, they get pounded pretty hard with some games.

I don't like 8-way joysticks for playing certain games (esp. pacman/ms. pacman, donkeykong, etc.), I usually put a 4-8 way convertible stick in, or I will use a 4 way on the left and 8 way on the right since the convertible sticks are like $40.

but I did just order one of those sets, going to build a small portable box I can bring to work and play on our really big TV's in the conference rooms for fun...

I am still using Mameui64 on windows machines, but on win7 a lot of my ROM's don't work with the newer version but on the two machines I built running XP (actually first was win98) about 3,000+ ROM's are listed as working.

I originally used a TV out card with S-video to a tv, at the time the graphics on older games looked better on a CRT than on a monitor or flat panel due to the old refresh rates and what-not, but the newer emulators have settings that emulate the old graphics without making them look like cartoons...

This thread got me thinking about building an Arcade for my wife. Got the Raspberry Pi, controllers and a monitor.

The challenge seems to be getting the games. Didn't want to break any laws so I ordered a SD Card with 11,000 games on it.

The guts should be up and running next week. As soon as I finish painting the kitchen, it will be time to build the cabinet and give her the true version. May have to set it up with head phones so I don't have to listen to the damn thing.

.........Jeepers.......

I've always wanted to build one of those arcade cabinets using one of those emulators. I really want a pinball emulator cabinet.
I just wish I had the room for the cabinet.

I built mine for about $300 whole shootin match. I bought an old cabinet for $50 and stuck a T.V. in it. There is a guy, used to be local to me, sells X-Boxes with the whole M.A.M.E. system and games loaded up for $100 or less. I still have his number from 2016. I got the $125 X Arcade joystick, it has arcade quality joysticks and buttons on it.

I did replace one stick with a changeable stick; you can lock it into either 8 way or 4 way. 4 way is a must for Donkey Kong, Pac Man etc.
