I think part of the problem might also be the economy.

PayPal is supposed to be a convenience and I use it regularly. Some people think the dollar is worthless so they started their own "digital" currency called a "BitCoin." But it isn't backed with anything either so when their network was attacked (DDoS), everyone started selling their "bitcoins" at lower prices. People will never learn I guess.

That article lost me somewhere half through. These computer people always have to make everything into such a complex charli foxtrot.

Thats my add, I'm guilty. It's one of those things that if you have one you know what it is. I will go back and add a description.

Not to argue, but to make the point, I'd like to have a mac mr5. Do you know what that is, with out searching for it?

I also don't like pay pal only sellers. I don't have pay pal and won't, ever. My money order cashes just as good as credit. Part number only adds are annoying. Ya, I know of a snap on jh546 is a 1/2 drive. Pictures don't tell the difference between 1/2 and 3/8. (made up number) I also tried to make a post about a post requirements before posting in classifieds. I hate people who try to sell their whole tool box on here, and the classifieds are their first and often last post. Or how some don't read the rules before posting. Seen multiple people Bump every day.

Overall, not worth putting too much time in bickering. It's free afterall. I've learned to just move on, often irritated. I will say some deals are to be had. I got a 20mm proto wrench for $5 shipped, like new.

The classifieds are like any other part of the forum, there are gonna be up's and downs... In the end as long as the Buyer/Seller are happy how it appears from the outside is irrelevant. Over the years I've bought multiple lots from Ebay, New techs who quickly realized that being a mechanic wasn't for them, also ran into a SO dealer who was liquidating on a cash only transaction and turned them here/ebay. On a side note.. I've probably spent 10k easy in the classifieds.. and overall my transactions as both a Buyer and Seller have been stellar. As far as the New PM system? It makes thing easier to navigate, before you could literally create a thread and within a couple minutes you would be on the third page. Your never gonna make everyone happy.. I think we all can agree with that..

I think part of the problem may be the expectation of the classified section. I believe overall most feel like it should be the "Great Deal Section" and not just a normal classified section. In reality is it just a classified section, if you like it you buy it, if not you don't. Just like the classifieds in the paper or craigslist.

We come here because CL is out of control on prices.

Actually I do know what a mr5 is because I have one. You have a legitimate point and personally I assumed that people knew what a Cornwell JR72 3/8 ratchet is just as alot of people know what a snap on f80 3/8 ratchet is.

I didn't do it to be inconsiderate, I assumed that someone who knows Cornwell tools and has one would know what I wanted. I went back and changed the add to be more descriptive since you guys had a legitimate complaint.

Don't worry about it. It's doubtful "Bitcoin" will ever become a viable global currency. Too many flaws and it is vulnerable to hackers. If you have any, trade 'em now, or sell 'em for dollars while they are still high in value.

The rule changes a while back, no replies to threads, combine seller's threads into one, etc, have really reduced the usuability of the classifieds (I don't have data, but I'd guess the traffic there is way down). I spent more time and money there back when it was the old way.

I think you might be onto something there. I always thought it was odd to look at "John Doe's Stuff for sale" as a title vs "New set of XYZ Wrenches - $** OBO"

Easier to find what your looking for...right now its a shot in the dark as the topic titles have little to no useful info as to whats inside.

The search function is nearly useless in finding a single item in the for sale section.

I buy, sell, and trade nearly every month.

For those that don't like PayPal what's your preferred Method of Payment? I also say Paypal preferred because it is fast and easy and as the seller I don't mind taking the 3% hit to get payment quickly. But I am open to other options I am just curious what others would prefer instead of PayPal? Certified check? Cash in an envelope?

Back a few years ago when I first joined th GJ it was fun buying things fewer members etc. I used to send either cash, a bank check, or write a check. Today it moves very fast and if you blink you can miss things on the classified section.

I also notice that the threads move at the speed of sound, you don't want to blink too fast or you will miss it on page five in no time. Not saying anything bad but the questions keep coming around in full circle and maybe it is time for some of the other members to step up and answer the same question as in "what is the best"...etc.

Maybe I need to again look at the classified section from time to time.

I haven't bought anything in a long while, don't see things I need, priced too high, low post count sellers, etc. I will say I have bought and sold a lot in the past and have only had good transactions. I also preferred the tool description in the title as opposed to "so and so's" for sale thread. Also see a lot of new snap on socket sets etc for like 20 dollars less than on the truck but in that case I would buy from the truck for warranty and piece of mind.

I have a set of those in metric, I was selling them untill I used one, they feel great in the hand

I'm really not one to complain about the "ergonomics" of a hand tool, but its night and day swinging cornwell wrench's compared to the raised panel's I grew up on. I carry Cornwell sets in stubby, standard and long in both SAE and metric.

I prefer U.S. postal money order.

I'm @ odds w/ the Paypal haters...sorry...just being honest...
Yes, cash is king, and a check/money order is almost as good - once it clears...

Paypal allows quick, simple payment and relieves some of the trust issue...confirmed Paypal account holders have at least one real-world account tied into their Paypal account, which gives at least some amount of recourse when a "member" - who spent 10 minutes to register specfically to unload tools, (that aren't hot - he swears!) - fails to follow through.

How much do you trust someone that you've never met, known only as a forum name, whose only merit is his forum post count? What is the magic number? 50? 100? 1000?

FWIW, I have a single transaction sourced from GJ that went exceptionally well. It was a trade that progressed from PM to text to a few phone calls over the course of a month... Even w/ all the time and legwork, I can't honestly say I didn't have a few butterflys after I shipped $100's worth of tools across the country w/ only the expectation of a similar box in return, @ some later date...

My take on post count being a single form of credit? Not much... Feedback threads? Maybe... A confirmed Paypal account? Not foolproof, but about as good as you can get in this day and age...

I can only hope that I didn't offend too many members who hate Paypal and have 10x(+) my post count...

I don't cruise the Classifieds as much as I used to because, after a couple of years, I filled out the gaps and replacements as needed. Thanks to the sellers!

I don't have a problem with the current format, though without discussion, it is kinda boring. Still a few deals come through making it worth a few minutes to check.

Since we all carry cameras there is no excuse not to have photos of the actual item.

As for PayPal - it is my preferred method of payment as a buyer. Click - Click...confirmed; email - email...tracking number.

Ever since a couple of scammers posted in the classifieds last year and ripped off some folks, classifieds have never been the same.

Also, some of the prices folks are asking for used items is damn near the cost of buying it new.

I thought it was better the way it was. I bought a lot back then
, after the rules changed, it took the fun out of it somehow.

Personal opinion but I'm not sure how many $100 Snap On ratchets sell. I understand they may be worth that much.

Dividing up the classifieds into types may help people find what they want easier. Obviously if they find what they want, they would buy more often. At least that would be the hopes.

I remember ebay before there was paypal. Since I'm in Canada and buy/sell internationally, MO's were a royal pain and you needed to send them priority for security. Paypal was cheaper when I considered all the bank costs and postage of alternative methods. Paypal is fast too which is a big plus for me. It's just too bad ebay bought paypal and bent it to their needs. I still prefer it to anything else though.

With many of these sites classified starts out so users can trade and help each other out, then dealers move in constantly monitoring ads and scooping the deals to resell and eventually outsiders appear who aren't even interested in the main theme of the site but see it as a way to market items for quick cash. There's a few newbies there now that look like they signed up for student discounts to get tools for 1/2 price and they are trying to flip them here for 10% off. Whoopie!

I don't mind the present format as I recognize ads I've seen already. Before it was hard to find ads you saw earlier but didn't want to act on right away.

I have not found as many good deals recently as in the past. When I see the same item bumped 47 times without a price change it does make me wonder. Also discouraging is the ripoff artists who show up. I had a person sell me two ratchet wrenches but he could never get around to sending them after I paid. Lots of good excuses about school, etc. Then he stopped responding to e-mail. But after I filed a claim with Paypal he responded in 2 hours to give me a refund. Funny how that works. One reason for paying non-gift with Paypal.
