Not quite four years ago, while visiting a neighboring town of Spearfish, SD, my wife informed me of a small machine shop she had seen just off of the main drag downtown and suggested we drive by. Of course I was interested in seeing it, but I never guessed I'd see what lie behind the block walls and single pane picture windows.

When I laid eyes on this monument to days gone by, I knew I had to at least stop and poke my head in the door. After a few moments spent with my jaw scraping the pavement outside the roll up door, I was greeted kindly by the owner, John Clauser. I expressed to him my sincere interest in taking a closer look inside, and he generously allowed me to snoop around and snap some photos (which are embarrassingly poor admittedly). John even gave me a nickel tour of the place, patiently answering my questions and enlightening me on some of the over 50 years worth of history he shared with his building.

Commanding your attention on your immediate left upon entering the overhead door is this very early and massive LeBlonde engine lathe. Unfortunately I can't recall the swing and bed length of this old dinosaur, but I do remember him telling me that he had converted it from flat belt, line shaft drive. John also shared with me the story of how he transported the lathe to it's current home, which involved an axle outfitted to the bed of the lathe and a tow straight down main street!

These photos really do no justice to just how incredible this place is, but take a look around, there's so much to see!

If I'm recalling correctly, the man in this photo is John's son. It's a relief that such a rare slice of Americana will be carried on for years to come.

Here's the man himself! What a privilege it was to have the opportunity to meet John and tour his shop. Without a doubt though, more should be done to capture this time capsule and John's story.

Awesome little find...looks like he's got some good taste in machinery. Everything appears to be pretty clean and well maintained...wouldn't pass a 5S walk in most modern factories but it looks to be well maintained and well used....hope the son and the customers can keep it going for the next generation if he so chooses.

I think most of us like and appreciate those super slick, laboratory style shops - I know I do, but there's nothing like John's shop. It can't be replicated and the stories those walls could tell would fill volumes!

Reminds me of Dad's garage growing up. Bridgeport and a very similar Leblond Regal. Tooling, setup blocks, measuring devices laid out on the unused table, headstock or carriage without any distinct organization but still close at hand. Multiple projects in process and at a causal glance may seem messy but with a closer look you realize it's more ordered than chaos.

Yes, but it's one of the gearbox models with two speeds.

I have no doubt that John and his son know where everything is despite the messy appearance!

I love shops like that. Thanks for sharing. Did you talk at all about what industry or industries he serves and what types of jobs he typically does?
We did discuss the type of work he does. If I'm remembering correctly, he took pride in not specializing in any one industry or type of job, he was just a general job shop. I believe he said he gets a lot of work from the local ranchers. Just browsing his shop you could see projects of all sorts, machining and welding related.

Austin,

Great thread! I love hearing the old timers stories and visiting places like these

I spent 22+ years as a tool and die maker at Parker Hannifin, I ran a Le Blond lathe just like this one, it was a Cadillac! what a pleasure to run, I would kill to have one in DaBarn today

Thank you for sharing! I feel strongly that Mr. Clauser and his shop deserve a professional quality film documentary to capture and share some of that knowledge and history. At the least, better photos and a transcribed conversation.
