Can this adapter be removed with a set of wedges and replaced with a different chuck to increase chuck height?

I have read some of the adapters are removable. The manual does not show the adapter as a separate piece.

the pic you attached shows a Morse taper # 2 . it is removable with a proper sized drift ( wedge shape that drives the taper out)
bu then you can only install MT 2 shank drill bits . so yeaas, you could gain height but then you lose the drill chuck

The MT2 socket is part of the spindle and can't be removed. If you want to gain height you can substitute the spindle assembly with a male JT33 end. They are two separate spindles.

Sorry for the confusion. I understand how to remove the chuck itself, but my question is referring to removing the chuck adapter.

I could be misunderstanding, but I have read that some of these adapters are factory conversion adapters that can be removed on some drill presses and replaced with a different chuck.

That being said I am 100% positive that I have no clue what I am talking about. Trying to add a cheap cross slide but it doesn't allow for me to use the table due to height. I'd like to be able to use the table with the cross slide. Guess I could try to find a Jacobs spindle on ebay...

No, not by what I see on the schematic.

The only M2 adapter I'm aware of is on various Delta-Rockwell machines. Most often the 15" models. It threads onto the J33 taper with threaded collar.

Look at the chuck you have and tell us the markings on it. Often it will be something like 34-02 or 3A. From the number you can determine if there is a tapered seat in the chuck, and what size it is.

You can get drill chucks with Morse Taper adapters already installed. If your chuck is worn out or won't run true, a complete replacement may fix the issue.

Seems to my uneducated eye that they both rerun the same quill, so it seems like you should be able to pop out the MT2, see what the “up” end looks like it, and match it on something that fits a chuck you can find.

What am I missing?

I think you might still be confused. The cylindrical part you circled is not the adapter. That's the spindle. The inside of the spindle has a Morse taper. The drill chuck has a Jacobs taper. The adapter that matches the Morse taper to the Jacobs taper can be removed to fit different chucks, tools, or drills. If you want to fit the xy table, the spindle would have to be replaced by the shorter one that has an integral Jacobs taper.
