Hey guys, I was thinking about picking up a used drill press on Craigs and wondering if any of you could give me an idea of price for one of these that would appear to be in good condition?

I believe it is a single phase motor.

Any tips what to look for? would a link to ad help?

Thank you

Depending on condition and options I have seen them go from $150-$1000. What I looked for was does the table have the arc of shame, does it have the lift system? Run out with quill in and fully extended. What taper mt2 or j33. If it has the reeves drive I would check to see if it functions correctly. Good thing about clausing is they are still in business and have most parts in stock. Bad thing is they think they are made out of gold. I bought a clausing 16xx (variable speed j33 taper) a couple years back in almost prefect condition for $500. Hope this helps.

Probably the same one I've been looking at. Nice condition, no table lift but has the mt2 taper and variable speed. I personally would want to be at $500 or less like shawhite mentioned.
But, they are quality and don't come up very often.

I would not be able to truly test run out. can eyeball of feel be good enough?

arc of shame? meaning people drill into table?

so what do you guys think of this one? I don't want to undercut anyone, were you really going to get it lafester?

No, I have just been looking at it and thinking about shooting him an offer.
I have a Powermatic 1150 so I am good.

Yeah, arc of shame is drilling into the table.
Just run anything straight in the chuck and check for wobble.

I think it looks great, barely used. I would just try and talk him down a little. It will sit there for awhile at $700.

looks like there might be a little arc of shame...but also just some crud on table. is it more like a battle scar? would you not get it for this reason? I guess if it bothered someone that much they can find a table on ebay?

would 600 be respectable offer? I dont think this guy knows too much about it from email with him. is there ammo I can use? does it look like it is missing top cover? he mentioned something about that. are they sometimes sold with no top cover?

does this one have the more favorable chuck?

Up to you of course. The pulleys are worth $500 alone if that makes a difference. I don't think anything is missing but you could complain about no table lift which will run $200 or so.

I would use the arc of shame as a bargaining point. Personally I would offer $400 but would take it off his hands for $500. The table looks like it has the arc of shame. It’s the smaller table but it does have the mt2 spindle which I wish mine had. A table lift on eBay will run you $200 ish if you can find one. If you buy it from clausing you are looking at $790. It also looks like it has been re-powered that would be another point I would use to bargain if it’s not a higher end 3/4hp motor. Should be able to eyeball run out good enough but clausing is still around and you can get parts from them or eBay has a lot of parts as well.

Here is my clausing. One when I got it home and one of it after I cleaned the table and base up.

Sad part is I haven’t used it in a while because I got a steal on a couple arbogas but I can’t bring myself to part with the clausing.

Sounds like they will probably let it go for cheap since they don’t have any attachment to it. I would start at $400

Should be fine. I got a cheap bandsaw from someone in that situation.
They just leave and all their stuff is still in the garage.

I don't want them to shoot me! I have a list of negatives in my head. I am not good at haggling price

Got it for $500!

Thanks guys!

But now I have more questions naturally. Should I continue it in here or start new thread? will you guys get update notifications on thread if I add to it down the road?

I can post additional pics as questions arise.

do the chucks ever need to be reseated? it almost seemed like the shaft was tru and then some runout in the chuck and more so in the bit. It seems like there might be some runout starting in the chuck and down.

At $500 I would get a WEN 15" floor standing DP. Variable speed like the clausing, table lift mechanism, etc. I love old steel but not at the price theyre asking when you can get a comparable one new.

https://wenproducts.com/products/15-inch-variable-speed-drill-press-4225

while this would probably suit my needs, I have always wanted an older drill press made in USA that I could fix up a little if I needed to.

I avoid foreign stuff. Not because I do not think they can't accomplish what I want, but more an issue with their business practices and pollution output.

Do you like Wen products?

Probably a bad chuck. Not sure what the taper is but usually you can remove it with wedges or sometime there may be a hole drilled and tapped on the inside of the chuck that you can use to remove it. I would remove the chuck and test for run out. If you still have run out remove the MT2 arbor and try another one. What type of chuck is it? If you have any questions that are not getting answered on the board just pm me and I will help as much as I can.

Sweet, now I can stop looking at it. I probably would have bit at $500 and sold the pm for no reason other then the clausing is older and not gold colored.

the close-up at top of shaft...the seal is loose? there is a sealed ball bearing in there, correct? I think the bearing is competent, but looks like the seal came out. I am wondering if I should just put new bearing

do you guys know if exploded parts diagram at clausing website? I guess that would be helpful as I am learning

5 days is about right. I have a few parts laying around from when I parted one out last year. If you are missing anything small I might still have it. What is that piece above the table?

I've never had a mt2 spindle. Check vintage machinery for a manual.

That bearing is the spindle bearing. Nothing special. Buy a good quality bearing and replace the top and bottom bearings in the quill.

I think that is some special thing custom put on. It unbolts. I will take some closer pics and maybe you guys can tell me what it was for...but it does come off.

what parts do you have?

In a year or two, I will be better able to restore this. I should have a cabinent baster with soft media etc etc

What is a good "soft" restore for now? steel wool and WD40 on non painted parts? WD40 and rag on painted parts?

are there some must check items before I can simply use it?? It will be light use...probably not more than 1-2x/month for awhile anyway

can I just lube a few things and get the run out good and have fun with it?

what is a really nice chuck I should get if it needs it?

I am a beginner at this stuff. I don't have a dial indicator but not opposed to buying one. I will have other uses for it.

Could one of you post a good dial indicator set-up so I can see what to look for? like +/- accuracy etc and stand that would work good for this? it would be first thing I ever dial indicated!

I would just wipe it down and put it to work. Nice chuck well that is subjective and depends on how much you want to spend. USA Jacobs would be nice. If you have a lot of money a keyless Albrecht.

but I need morse taper, not jacobs, correct?

I guess first thing is to test run out. did you see pics of chuck on it? is that a good one?

Supreme chucks are ok but not as good as Jacobs. I have one with a mt2 shank if yours tests bad.

Jacobs is the chuck manufacturer. Morse taper is the arbor that the chuck goes on. You can buy chucks that already have the mt2 arbor on them. Something like this except I would try to find an old stock USA Jacobs. There are other brands that are good but I would stay away from anything from China my opinion. As far as a dial indicator for drill press use any cheap indicator will do the trick.

No, you need an arbor with one end MT2 male and the other male end matched to the chuck's Jacob's taper. (JT33 was pretty common). Like this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2MT-to-33J...398193?hash=item2619ba5171:g:W2oAAOSwW0tcq7Ad

This guy's been selling NOS Jacobs 33-34 chuck's pretty cheap and they look like the one's that were made in Hartford!

https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-JACOBS...770362?hash=item1cdef656fa:g:L-wAAOSwbl9d6GNR

If you want to go higher end look for a Jacobs Super Chuck (ball bearing) like a 14N. If you want even higher then that get an Albrecht keyless.

(I hate keyed chucks)
