$300 for one that quit working.

Floor model, variable speed.

Good deal?

Bill
Possibly. If it's just a bad motor, yes. What are the reeves drive and spindle bearings like? If the spindle turns freely with no runout and the reeves drive is ok, I'd grab it.

Assuming the drive pulleys are in good shap and the spindle is not bent I would say $300 is an ok price. I have a spare clausing 3/4hp 3 phase motor if you need one.

Find out why it quit working. If it's a bad motor, switch, cord then buy it.

If it's the Reeves drive setup that's gone bad, those parts are very expensive.

When you take apart enough drill presses, you find that Clausing made drills that are a tier above in quality compared to others in the same category of drill (delta 220, rockwell, powermatic, walker-turner, etc.).

I have a Clausing 16" slow speed pulley (non-reeves-drive) drill with the optional table raising crank. I love it and wouldn't sell it for twice that price.

Also, we are assuming your press is 16" (i.e. 8" between the drill bit and the column). Even better if it's actually a 20" (i.e. 10" between drill bit and column).

All parts are still available from Clausing, but sit down before they tell you the prices.

The 16" drill has a column that is 1/64" smaller diameter than other 3" column drills, so you can't swap a Delta table (for example) onto your Clausing.

300 is on par if it just needs something simple. . I Paid $165. but also put a couple hundred into repairs and parts on the reeves drive. A keyway on one of the pullies had sheared. AP_Mech got everything back in place for me.

If you want to take a look at what it takes to repair a faulty reeves drive, here is my post from a few years ago

I concur with everything above. Look into it and find out what's wrong. My Clausing stopped working when the motor capacitor went out. $10 later I was back in business.
