Here is my Clausing Drill Press model #1770 I just got done restoring. It sat for years unused in an open front shed so there was surface rust all over. No drill holes in the table either. I took it apart and bead blasted everything and replaced all five bearing in the spindle as well as the 2 delcron plastic bushings in the pullies. It now has less than 1 thousandth run out in the spindle. It runs so smooth and what a difference it is compared to the 2 China presses I've had over the years. I gave 200.00 for it and have 75 in bearings so overall a cheap quality drill press.

Awesome!

Here is a tip right out of the owner's manual: You're supposed to run the speed adjustment through its full range at least once a month in order to keep the belt from taking a set. If you leave it sitting for months without the belt moving, it can cause additional vibration as the two curved sections over the pulleys tend to stay that way.

I bought this same press for my brother a few years ago - they are getting harder to find. Use often and enjoy!

thanks for the comments guys. I did read that about running the vari drive thru its paces and it makes sense. Im just now getting my new shop all equipped slowly. I went thru a divorce 7 years ago and at that time had a nice lathe and Bridgeport mill with all the goodies. Had to sell everything, boy that was tough. those are my next 2 purchases. its just been a long haul getting back on my feet and doing the things I really enjoy. I love this site and have used it so much. thanks Paul

Beautiful! I'm very jealous right now.

So... this might be a stupid question, but how do you secure a workpiece on a table that large w/ no slots?

Im just going to clamp things the best I can for now but plan on making some fixtures for clamping in the future. My next project will be making a 50 ton electric hydraulic press so I will be drilling lots of holes here soon. I wish I had my lathe bought right now as I would be making my own cylinder for the press. Will have to hire that done for now. Paul

Those types of drill press tables (production tables) were designed for large vises or jigs and or large clamps to drill relatively smaller holes. They are more designed for the machine shop vs a general fab shop. For the hope shop a standard table with through holes is more practical and even safer.

I have a Clausing 1670 that is in need of some bearings. By the looks of it the 1770 and the 1670 share the same bearings. Did you buy the bearings from Clausing? Or did you buy generic ones. If you bought generic ones can you pass along the sizes, as I have not taken mine apart yet to get the necessary info

thanks

Ive already thrown out my old bearings or I would measure them. They are all common sizes that I bought from my local auto parts store. I took all the old ones in and they sized them there. You could buy National which are almost double the price that the China ones are but I believe better quality. They carried both on hand. Paul

That is a fine looking drill press. I have a nice 20" Wilton, but would love to have variable speed control. Great job on the resto.

Yes the variable speed is great. they can say what they want about the reeves drive (delcron plastic bushings that the pulley rides on) but they are very dependable and last a long time. I replaced mine and bored them to size and am sure that they will last my lifetime as the ones I took out were original and not bad shape at all. If you have an older wilton they are an awesome press as well Paul
