Clausing model 2272 drill press questions

guy local to me has this Clausing model 2272 for sale . works as it should he says . can test its function still plugged in .

he is looking for 1500 obo . what would why guys think its worth ?

i see there still made new and almost 6k price tag .

The Reeves variable speed drive belt on those tends to squeak. This can be fixed with a belt replacement or applying paraffin wax to the edge of the belt (for safety sake with the drill press unplugged from power). Powematic describes using paraffin to quite them down in their drill press manuals and I found it works well. Reeves drives like being cycled thru their entire speed range when running on a regular basis. Most folks don't bother. If sitting too long they can develop a set in the belt. You will hear the sound when it runs. For reference, the last one I turned down in nicer condition was $1000. It took a couple weeks to sell. But that is very location dependent.

Its single phase so its not like there's going to be this 3ph discount that you can sometimes find.

Strange that its missing the chuck yet has a bunch of chips on the table (?) I bet they have something nice like a Super Chuck they are unwilling to part with.

I have a similar model, 3ph with the sidesaddle power feed unit. A new belt did quiet it down but was ~$100 about 10 years ago as I recall. Someone not-named-Clausing makes the replacement part of course but Clausing has it especially made with only their name printed on it so you can't easily cross-reference it lol.

If you are within drive of Cleveland (not sure, suspect its 6-8 hours) you can probably do a lot for that budget at HGR Surplus.

Too high for the cosmetic condition. And the cosmetic condition (to me) would have me concerned about the mechanical condition. I wouldn't go above 800 for that one.

That Cardinal Speedvise is worth a couple hundred by itself.

I’d think $1200 would be fair.

Ask about the chuck too. Those can be expensive.

Prices seem to vary wildly on these since few people are willing to spend 1k + on an old drill press. Personally I wouldn't be interested for more then $500 but I'm just a home user. If you are going to make money with it then the price becomes much more reasonable.

Keep in mind you can find nice mill drills for under $1500 fairly often.

I don't know about retail but auction price is $600 to $700. As stated, be sure to run it through the entire speed range as part of inspection. The Reeve drive is prone to getting stuck if not exercised. Love the speedvise.
