Cleaning Air Compressor (INSIDE)

I am in the middle of restoring a OLD WAYNE 6200 air compressor. I have taken out the valves (there are 7) and want to clean the parts and the head. Would pinesol work (diluted with water), or should I use a carb dip? There seems to be some carbon build up inside the head.

Also about honing the pistons. I have never done this before and they are different sizes (2-stage). Is this process hard? I assume I need a three stone rotating honer.

I am wanting on parts (KEN AT AIR-FLO IS AWESOME).

I wouldn't use the water-based cleaner. If you do, be sure to dry the part off immediately. Heat it with a torch or hairdrier until it's dry.

The carb cleaner should help dissolve any oil or grease, but it may not do much to the carbon.

I'd try scraping the carbon off first. As long as the piston and valves are sealing well, I don't think a small amount of carbon will have much effect on performance.

If you want to DIY the hard way, use oven spray or BBQ cleaner to help with the carbon. The easy way is to take it to a small engine or automotive machine shop. They can run it through the bake oven, touch up the valve seats, hone the cylinders and have it back to you looking like new.

Questions:

1. Are the valves reed or poppet?
2. Is the head and cylinder cast iron or aluminum?
3. Is there any ridge at the top of the cylinder?
4. Are the rods iron or aluminum. Do they have insert bearings?

I've had some luck decoking (decarbonizing) with rags soaked in diesel.
