I have my granddad's Schultes 48" level and I'd like to shine it up. I believe it's stainless steel - too heavy for aluminum and no rust anywhere on it. I didn't want to start with a wire brush and not sure which cleaners would work best without pitting it. Suggestions?

Also, concerning the caps which hold the actual levels in place (see photo): the paint is scratched badly and the screws are rusty. I'd like to remove them but fear screwing up the accuracy. Does anyone know how the levels are secured inside? If I remove the cap will these things just fall out? I don't want to learn the hard way.

Really value having generational tools. Appreciate your tips and opinions.
