Cleaning the air compressor

I moved my air compressor outside because I am cleaning the garage. It has been in there since 1993, and is quite dirty. Would it be OK to give it a bath with car soap and water? I can't see how it can hurt anything, and the usual precautions to keep water out of the motor and controls is only common sense. What are your thoughts???

I use a 50/50 mixture of Simple Green and water for cleaning all my machines
