Cleaning the knurling

What is there to use to clean up on ratchets and such that have the knurling on the handle to clean all that up?

A wire wheel will scratch them up pretty bad. Use a nylon brush. You can probably get them shank mounted for a drill, but mine is essentially a toothbrush with thicker bristles.

BTW, I have never seen ratchet knurling get dirty. It usually cleans up pretty well with a quick wipe down using a rag. Dirty knurling is common on older tools that have a sharper knurling on them, that get oily and greasy and collect dust to the point of turning into a dark cake.

Give them a quick spray with brakekleen.Dissolves the grease and crud pretty quick.

I use the wire wheel on my bench grinder, I never noticed any damage to the finish once done though. In fact I use my wire wheel tons more than the stone side of my grinder!

The brake cleaner or carb cleaner work wonders. If you are worried about scratching the handle with the wire brush on the grinder try a brass brush.

Cleanup

I use GOJO with a toothbrush. For really hard stuff, I use the GOJO with the pumice in it.

I use one of those fiberglass 'paint chip' pencils that you use to clean out a chip before you use touch up paint. I've also used it on brushed metal trim on cars from the 70's - 80's to clean the tarnish off but not damage the brushed metal finish. The 'glass will clean anything out of any crevice!
