I just got a great deal on some unused Snap-On sockets from the 90s. Unfortunately, whoever bought them and put them away also sloshed paint, dirt, oil and sawdust all over them. I scraped one clean with my fingernail and it's factory new. Apparently filthy = worthless.

What's the best way to clean paint-smeared chrome sockets quickly without endangering the paint? Lacquer thinner? Something else?

I keep a solvent can with diesel fuel in it for simple degreasing. Pretty good cleaner and gentle enough not to screw up finishes. (Always check compatibility first, though, on important things)
