Cleaning Up A New Britain Socket Set

I found a nearly complete New Britain socket set at a garage sale for $5.

It's similar to the set in the New Britain section on the alloy artifacts web site.

I have two questions:

1. There is very little rust, and I prefer Evaporust for that. But the sockets are sort of a grayish-white color. I believe I've read that they could be cadmium plated. Can they be cleaned up or polished?

I've read another thread and a wire brush is not in my plans, if only due to the possibility of cadmium plating.

2. The open ratchet and sliding T handle have square 1/2" female openings into which a drive bar with two square male ends is placed. The other end goes into conventional sockets. Are replacements available? The set has a couple, one stuck into a newer Husky socket.

Overall this is in pretty good shape. I will try to post pictures in a couple of days. But it's almost an identical twin to the set on alloy artifacts:

There is no channel for the speeder bar in mine, and the partition on the right is a different shape, but otherwise very similar...even still has a leather carrying handle.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Hank Murphy
